DescriptionPosition Summary
St. Bernard College Preparatory seeks an experienced, energetic, highly organized, and student-centered College Counselor for students in grades 10–12 for an initial three-month, full-time temporary appointment.
- The College Counselor will provide direct support to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and their families in the areas of college readiness, college selection, applications, financial aid, scholarships, academic planning, and postsecondary decision-making.
- The counselor will play a particularly important role in ensuring that seniors successfully complete the college application and financial aid process while establishing intentional college-readiness programming for students beginning in 10th grade.
- This position is intended to address an immediate school need while providing both SBCP and the selected candidate an opportunity to evaluate long-term fit.
Successful performance during the temporary appointment may lead to consideration for permanent full-time employment, based upon school needs, available funding, demonstrated effectiveness, and mutual interest.

Professional Expectations
The successful College Counselor will:
- Place students and their long-term success at the center of the counseling process.
- Maintain the highest standards of confidentiality, professionalism, judgment, and ethical conduct.
- Communicate warmly, clearly, and consistently with students, parents, colleagues, and college representatives.
- Demonstrate exceptional organization and follow-through, particularly when managing multiple student deadlines.
- Be highly visible, accessible, and responsive to students.
- Take initiative and work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
- Demonstrate flexibility and comfort working in a dynamic and growing school environment.
- Maintain current knowledge of college admissions, financial aid, UC/CSU requirements, NCAA eligibility, standardized testing, and emerging trends in higher education.
- Maintain strong relationships with college admissions professionals and professional counseling organizations.
- Support and model the mission, values, and Catholic identity of St. Bernard College Preparatory.
Qualifications Required
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively with high school-age students.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to deadlines and detail.
- Ability to develop positive relationships with students and families from a wide variety of backgrounds.
- Strong alignment with the mission and values of Catholic education. Preferred
- Master’s degree in counseling, education, school counseling, or a related field.
- California Pupil Personnel Services Credential or comparable counseling preparation.
- Prior experience in high school college counseling, academic counseling, teaching, college admissions, or related student-support work.
- Experience working specifically with students in grades 10–12.
- Experience with Naviance or a comparable college and career readiness platform.
- Familiarity with UC, CSU, Common Application, NCAA eligibility, FAFSA/CADAA, scholarships, and financial aid.
- Experience counseling students who may be the first in their families to navigate the college admissions process.
Possibility of Permanent Employment
At the conclusion of the temporary appointment, the position may be converted to permanent full-time status based upon satisfactory performance, demonstrated institutional need, available resources, and mutual agreement. Any permanent appointment, including compensation, benefits, work calendar, and responsibilities, will be established separately in accordance with the applicable policies of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
