Job Description

Step into a role where your expertise as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) makes a significant impact on students' daily lives. This contract opportunity, running from August 24th through May 28th, is based in a supportive environment covering elementary, middle, and high school students. You'll travel throughout the district, located near Blue Springs, MO, delivering crucial services and evaluations.

In this rewarding position, you'll empower students with visual impairments to achieve greater independence - teaching skills from proper cane technique and navigating urban environments, to mastering tasks such as reading Braille, using guide dogs, traveling through the city, handling money, and shopping for groceries. Extensive district orientation and ongoing support ensure you have all the tools you need to succeed.

Key

Qualifications:

  • National certification (ACVREP), commonly referred to as COMS, is required
  • Experience serving students with visual impairments, ideally across a range of age groups
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods for various educational levels
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and documentation skills
  • Valid driver's license and capacity to travel between multiple school sites

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments and deliver individualized orientation and mobility instruction
  • Collaborate with teachers, staff, and families to create supportive learning environments
  • Provide written evaluations and progress updates for students on your caseload
  • Participate actively in IEP meetings and consult with multidisciplinary teams

This is a full-time, onsite position (Monday-Friday).
