Position Summary

The College of Health and Human Sciences seeks applications for Academic Advisor I positions to support advising across the college including students in Construction Management, Design and Merchandising, School of Education, Food Science and Human Nutrition, Health and Exercise Science, Human Development and Family Studies, and School of Social Work. This position provides comprehensive advising and programming aimed at fostering student success, retention, and a sense of belonging within their academic major/department/college or Exploratory Studies.

Key responsibilities include guiding students in academic planning, overcoming academic barriers, and utilizing campus resources; supporting orientation sessions and academic transitions; managing academic records and communications; and assisting with initiatives to improve student success metrics. The advisor will actively address the unique strengths and needs of a diverse student population, including those from underrepresented and first-generation backgrounds. Collaboration with college departments, participation in student engagement events, and administrative contributions are essential aspects of this role.

By employing a holistic and innovative approach, the advisor will play a pivotal role in empowering students to achieve their academic and personal goals while attending the university.

Salary Range

$50,000 - $54,000

Job Duties
  • Manage an assigned caseload of undergraduate students and deliver individualized advising on course selection, degree planning, major exploration, and academic goal setting within established program guidelines.
  • Apply working knowledge of advising technologies, policies, and degree requirements to support student decision-making, maintain accurate records, and participate in assessment and continuous improvement of advising services.
  • Advise incoming first-year and transfer students through enrollment processes; contribute to welcome week and transition initiatives that support student entry into the university.
  • Implement institutional student success and retention initiatives.
  • Conduct proactive outreach to students based on academic indicators to promote persistence and timely progress.
  • Educate students on academic policies, procedures, and requirements (e.g., add/drop, withdrawal, appeals, graduation); provide appropriate referrals to campus resources to address academic and personal needs.
  • Use holistic, culturally responsive advising approaches that recognize students’ identities and experiences; foster students’ problem-solving, decision-making, and self-advocacy skills using developmental advising practices.
  • Engage in ongoing training, Advising Network activities, and shadowing to build advising competencies.
  • Develop a personal advising philosophy under supervisor guidance and participate in professional learning opportunities.
  • Perform related administrative and “advising-adjacent” duties such as assisting with events, communications, and program support.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree. 9 months (1 academic year) of professional experience working with adolescent or adult students in an education or related setting, - OR - 18 months (2 academic years) of graduate student experience working with adolescent or adult students in an education or related setting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Academic advising in a post-secondary education setting.
