• Ph.D. in Anthropology or Archaeology (degree in hand at time of appointment).
• Methodological approach that complements, but does not duplicate, existing faculty strengths.
• A record (or strong potential) of peer-reviewed publications and scholarly contributions.
• Working knowledge of key federal and state regulatory frameworks relevant to archaeology, including NAGPRA , NHPA /Section 106, NEPA , ARPA , and associated permitting, consultation, and compliance processes.
• Experience teaching anthropology/archaeology.
• Ability to lead field schools and manage excavation projects, including logistics, safety, and community engagement.
• Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative spirit.

• Engagement in public or community-based archaeology.
• Demonstrated record of obtaining extramural funding.
• Experience working with landowners, Tribal Nations, descendant communities, or regional agencies on archaeological or heritage projects.
• Familiarity with cultural resource management (CRM) workflows, reporting standards, and permitting processes.

Summary

Sul Ross State University seeks a tenure-track field-based archaeologist whose research employs traditional and emerging techniques. The successful candidate will have a regional specialization in the Big Bend region or the greater US Southwest. They will contribute to the mission of the Center for Big Bend Studies (CBBS) by developing a sustained, place-based research program grounded in field-based archaeology and collaborative regional scholarship.

The faculty member will support the BA and MA programs in Anthropology through high-quality teaching, mentorship, field-based training, and supervising graduate students. This is a nine-month, tenure-track appointment with a 2-2 teaching load (two courses per semester).

Responsibilities

• Maintain an active research program in field-based archaeology with a sustained record of publication in peer-reviewed sources.
• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in anthropology, mentor and supervise students, and contribute to curricular and program development.
• Lead and supervise summer field schools.
• Participate in Center and departmental service.
