Substitute Teacher

Position Summary

Substitute teacher provides instruction, manages a safe and nurturing environment, and supports the academic and emotional development of students. Responsibilities include following lesson plans and schedules, completing duties assigned by the regular classroom teacher, maintaining a positive learning atmosphere, and ensuring the safety and well‑being of all students. The substitute must demonstrate flexibility, patience, empathy, strong communication skills, and a commitment to encouraging positive student behavior.

• Must possess a valid Iowa teaching license, a valid substitute teaching license, or a valid substitute authorization.
• Prefer a willingness to be available to all levels across the district.
• Previous successful substitute experience is preferred but not required.

• Maintain the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom.
• Maintain a climate conducive to learning that is appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
• Maintain effective communication with staff and students.
• Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
• Be an innovative, passionate, and energetic individual.
• Use the district time‑management system, TCP, for accepting substitute positions, clocking in, and approving and verifying hours.
• Maintain an acceptable standard of professionalism while serving as a substitute in the district.
• Use appropriate language and tone when speaking with students and staff.
• Avoid gossip or negative comments about the regular teacher or students.
• Ensure the safety and well‑being of all students by executing school emergency procedures and protocols effectively during drills and real emergencies.
• Report to the building principal.
• Adhere to the substitute handbook, board policies, and building expectations.

• New substitutes must complete building-specific substitute job shadowing before accepting assignments.
• Complete state or district‑required training assigned by HR.
• Attend the beginning‑of‑the‑year substitute teacher meeting.
• District requests substitutes not cancel unless there is an emergency; repeated cancellations may result in removal from the district list.

$145 per day. Licensed substitute teachers working long‑term assignments of 10 days or more in a single assignment will receive a daily increase.
