Job Summary
Transportation Engineer (Civil) located in Sacramento. Salary range $6,488 – $12,152 per month. New‑to‑state candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
Under the direction of a Senior Bridge Engineer of the Structure Hydraulics and Hydrology Branch in ODTS, the Transportation Engineer (TE) will conduct hydraulic studies and prepare written reports, models, maps, charts and graphs for rivers, canals and floodways where Caltrans or local agency infrastructures encroach into waterways. Incumbents may be assigned more difficult work as experience increases, may serve as a lead person over the activities of various engineering and technical personnel, and may perform other work‑related duties as assigned.
Travel and/or temporary relocation may be required.
Position located at 1801 30th Street, Sacramento, Sacramento County.
This position may be eligible for telework. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed. Business travel may be required. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the candidate.
The Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program is a mandatory 24‑ to 33‑month rotation assignment for all permanent, full‑time employees that have completed their probationary period and were hired by Caltrans Districts after June 22, 2018. The program includes mandatory core assignments in Design and Construction units and a mandatory elective assignment, each lasting 6 to 12 months.
Minimum Requirements- Minimum qualifications as per the Class Specification.
- For Range D appointment, a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required. For other ranges, a PE license is not required.
- Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required: typed, no more than 2 pages, single‑spaced, using 12‑point font. Resumes do not replace the SOQ. The SOQ must address the following questions:
- List any courses, job experience, and training that relate to Hydrology and Hydraulics.
- Describe your ability to work effectively within a team environment and situations where you assumed a leadership role.
- Describe your written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, handling multiple priorities, and meeting strict deadlines.
- List your computer skills and applicable knowledge (MS Office, HEC‑RAS, SRH‑2D, etc.).
- Explain why you feel you would be a good fit for Structure Hydraulics & Hydrology.
- Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. Unofficial transcripts may be provided for education verification; official transcripts may be required upon appointment.
