Matter 42 is a San Francisco-based startup developing an AI-driven framework for autonomous materials discovery, characterization, and manufacturing. The goal is to accelerate the development of semiconductor, quantum‑materials, and energy‑efficient device technologies by integrating agentic AI, multimodal data analytics, and machine‑learned physics models into a closed‑loop manufacturing workflow.

This is a 1‑to‑3 month independent contractor engagement for an Artificial Intelligence Engineer with 3 + years of AI/ML model experience, a solid background in quantum physics, and a proactive, self‑driven work style.

• Apply applied AI to the intersection of physics, materials, and manufacturing
• Collaborate closely with world‑class researchers on the AI‑driven framework that bridges molecules to manufacturing lines
• Work independently in a fast‑moving research environment
• Deliver results within the defined scope and timeline of the short‑term project

• 3+ years of experience training and fine‑tuning AI/ML models
• Understanding of basic quantum physics
• Strong curiosity and ability to learn quickly
• Self‑driven and proactive working style

• Bachelor’s or higher degree in Materials Science, Physics, or Inorganic Chemistry
• Research or industrial experience in AI‑driven simulation modeling
• Based in the Bay Area, CA

Independent contractor (1099), primarily remote (PST) with 3‑5 in‑person meetings if based in the Bay Area.
