** Description of Work
** This is a REPOST of position. Previous applicants MUST REAPPLY to be considered.
The Geologist/Hydrogeologist will evaluate uncontrolled and unregulated hazardous waste sites to determine the nature and extent of contamination and potential for imminent hazards to public health and the environment. Using hydrogeological decision making and interpretation expertise, this position will direct cleanup of these sites (whether the cleanup is by voluntary parties or enforcement of responsible parties) or will plan limited work to identify and abate imminent hazards through state-funded contracts for the sites that are considered orphaned.

The position will serve as a liaison for the program to municipalities, environmental consulting firms, the public, interest groups, organizations, and the Division. This position is located within the inactive Hazardous Sites Branch within the Superfund Section of the Division of Waste Management.

Key Responsibilities:

• Review, interpret, and evaluate data associated with environmental contamination.

• Use hydrogeologic interpretation skills to characterize a contamination incident.

• Use hydrogeologic decision-making skills and electronic tools to identify risks to public health and the environment to prioritize the site and plan appropriate actions.

• Understand the risk of contaminant exposure associated with its migration to groundwater, surface water, air and/or via direct human contact.

• Communicate in oral and written form with other Division program representatives, environmental consulting firms, the public, interest groups and organizations.

This is accomplished through the Hazardous Waste, Solid Waste, Superfund and Underground Storage Tank Sections, and the Brownfields Redevelopment Section.
