Electrical/Controls Engineer

This position is for the role of Electrical/Controls Engineer on the Midwest Regulated & Renewable Energy (RRE) – Engineering Team in the Midwest. The engineer will support resolution of technical issues and perform engineering design for a diverse mix of generation including coal, natural gas, hydro, and solar facilities. This role provides engineering support, focusing on power plant systems and equipment at the generating stations within the region.

Responsibilities
  • Manage work in engineering areas of specialization with minimal supervision.
  • Develop advanced skills and work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects.
  • Identify problems, develop solutions, and take action to resolve.
  • Provide engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Ensure accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities.
  • Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches.
  • Conduct engineering and related studies; complete non‑routine engineering projects with minimal oversight.
  • Completely manage project schedules and interfaces; design, operate, and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
  • Develop positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills and maintain accurate records and files.
  • Support the company’s goals and represent the company positively and professionally.
  • Facilitate MER Meetings to review risk items and develop scope and budget recommendations for future inspections.
  • Collaborate with COSO and Station/Plant Engineers to initiate project requests in Power Plan long‑range planning.
  • Support Risk Grid items with Station/Plant Engineer and Technical Manager for entry to the Station Risk Grid.
  • Provide technical oversight and support for station operations, maintenance, and implementation managers for emergent technical requests, outages, and projects.
  • Document inspection findings and provide prioritized repair recommendations.
Basic Qualifications
  • Obtained a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program or PE status.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, or 5 years with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • A master’s degree in engineering is considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Desired Qualifications
  • Electrical Engineering degree from an ABET‑accredited program.
  • Experience with Power Plant or industrial electrical or control equipment.
  • Experience with DCS programming or tuning, system development, construction, or upkeep of physical hardware.
  • Experience with simulator system development and programming.
  • Instrumentation knowledge – temperature, pressure, flow, density and applicable transmitters.
  • Alarm management and rationalization experience.
  • Experience with medium and high voltage equipment – motors, breakers, switch gear, transformers, electrical bus, generators, instrumentation.
  • Functional knowledge and implementation of electrical system protection including protection schemes, breaker coordination, relay operations and maintenance, and compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of electrical testing protocols and in‑field application.
  • Familiarity with IEEE, NEC, NFPA, and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Proficiency in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, and making sound recommendations.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  • Experience in the utility industry and basic principles of project management.
Working Conditions & Travel

Onsite mobility classification. Performs work in an office and power plant environment.

Approximately 30–50% travel within the region.
