Nuclear Engineer
The Senior Health Physicist/Nuclear Engineer implements key elements of the Radiation Protection Program and provides expert radiological support across production, research and development, and project activities. This role focuses on minimizing personnel exposure to radiological hazards, ensuring strict compliance with applicable regulations and procedures, and supporting continuous improvement in radiation safety practices. The position requires advanced technical knowledge of radiation safety, regulatory requirements, and radiological analysis, as well as the ability to interpret data, lead projects, and train personnel.
Responsibilities
- Lead program functions and support groups that use radioactive materials, ensuring safe and compliant operations.
- Implement assigned elements of the Radiation Protection Program and maintain alignment with corporate and site policies.
- Maintain operational compliance with U.S. and international regulatory agencies and guidelines, including FDA, EU, Health Canada (HC), TGA, PIC/S, ISO, USP, NRC, and cGMP requirements.
- Inspect and audit operations involving the use of radioactive materials to verify adherence to regulatory requirements, permits, procedures, and internal policies.
- Recommend and implement corrective actions when inspections or audits identify nonconformances or opportunities for improvement.
- Develop and implement Radiological Work Permits for non-routine radiological activities, ensuring appropriate controls and monitoring are in place.
- Provide radiation safety support to assigned projects and lead radiation safety–related initiatives from planning through execution.
- Write clear and accurate technical reports to support regulatory compliance, internal documentation, and project deliverables.
- Serve as backup for Health Physics Technicians, performing their duties as needed to maintain continuous coverage.
- Conduct regular radiological surveys across site-wide facilities to verify compliance with regulatory and program requirements.
- Perform instrument calibrations, leak testing of radiation-emitting sources, and environmental sampling and analysis of radiological samples.
- Generate, organize, and maintain documentation and records in accordance with program and regulatory documentation requirements.
- Conduct radiological incident investigations, present findings to the Health Physics Manager or Radiation Safety Officer, and recommend and implement corrective actions where appropriate.
- Promote and implement safety programs to maintain a safe working environment through training, awareness initiatives, and consistent adherence to policies, programs, and procedures.
- Develop, implement, and periodically review Standard Operating Procedures related to the safe use of radioactive materials and regulatory compliance.
- Review proposed regulations and evaluate their potential impact on radiation protection programs and facility operations.
- Provide radiological support during emergency conditions and response activities, including off-hours support when required.
- Maintain ongoing compliance with federal, state, local, and industry radiation protection regulations and best practices.
- Perform similar and related duties as assigned to support overall radiation safety and program objectives.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent certification in radiation or physical sciences and at least 3 years of industry experience; or an Associate's degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of radiation monitoring experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and cross-functionally with multiple teams and stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly.
- Advanced knowledge of radiation and health physics principles, including associated mathematics.
- Advanced knowledge of U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements and guidance and practical experience implementing them.
- Advanced knowledge of industry best practices for radiation safety and their implementation in operational environments.
- Experience with safety training and safety procedures related to radiation safety programs.
- Hands-on experience in radiation monitoring and radiation safety program implementation.
- Ability to conduct radiological surveys, instrument calibrations, leak tests, and environmental sampling and analysis.
- Ability to develop and implement Radiological Work Permits and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Capability to conduct audits, inspections, and incident investigations and to recommend effective corrective actions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Certifications from the American Board of Health Physics or the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technicians are preferred but not required.
