Distribution Engineer, Electrical Utility in Newport

Leidos is seeking a Distribution Engineer / Designer in Rhode Island who is passionate about electric utility design engineering. The position requires working directly with clients to ensure high‑quality work.

This position has remote‑working capabilities but candidates must be located within a commutable distance of Rhode Island. The selected candidate will be expected to attend in‑person meetings and assignments within Rhode Island as needed.

• Perform design engineering for Leidos electric utility customers.
• Develop work packages for OH, UG, URD, and Make Ready using customer GIS and WMS systems such as EFD, AUD, Small world, ArcGIS, Infor, EAM, STORMS, and Maximo.
• Manage scope, schedule, and budget of work assigned.
• Perform functional tasks, planning, and customer follow‑up.
• Perform scope analysis and maintain schedule adherence to advocate client priorities.
• Initiate continuous improvement to workflow processes driving efficiency and high‑quality standards.
• Coordinate conflicting utilities and other field engineering design requirements for large design packages in dense urban environments, including work permit development, easements, and ROW applications.
• Travel locally or regionally to collect field data for work packages.
• Communicate confidently with local electricians, utility engineers, and town engineers.

• 2+ years of prior relevant experience.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent experience or certifications.
• Proficiency with the Electric Safety Code (NESC).
• Prior experience with structural analysis, guying calculations, cable pulling calculations, coordination of protective devices, and electric demand and fault current calculations.
• Own reliable transportation for local travel.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

• Estimated cost development, BOM creation, and CIAC calculations.
• Design tools such as Pole Foreman, Pull Planner, and Katapult.
• Work management and job estimating software.
• CAD or Micro Station for electrical distribution design.
