Under the general direction of the State Bridge Maintenance Engineer and Deputy Division Chief of Maintenance for Structure Maintenance and Investigations (SM&I), a Principal Bridge Engineer, the incumbent supervises, oversees, directs and performs quality control of the work of the inspection seniors, inspection team leaders and inspectors in the SM&I Office of Structure Investigations North. The primary responsibilities of the office are: safety inspections, structural condition assessments, National Bridge Inventory (NBI) data, load postings, critical findings, emergency response and work recommendations for preservation, repairs, rehabilitations, retrofits and replacements of in-service bridges on the state and local agency highways within the boundaries of Caltrans Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 per 23 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 650 Subpart C National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and its associated references, the National Bridge Inspection Program (NBIP) Metrics, and the applicable Caltrans policies, procedures and manuals.
The incumbent also assists and acts for the State Bridge Maintenance Engineer with any delegated duties, as needed.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs.
Business travel may be required and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Minimum Qualifications- Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a civil engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. and

Experience:
One year of structure engineering experience as a Senior Bridge Engineer in the California state service. - Or II:
Experience:
One year of experience equivalent in level of responsibility to a Senior Transportation Engineer in the California state service AND at least two years of structure engineering experience as a Transportation Engineer (Civil), Range D, or higher in the California state service. - Or III:
