Position: ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY SPECIALIST (5401)
Location: Louisiana

Under general supervision, this position performs professional environmental work involving the enforcement of water pollution control laws and implementing programs and policy. Employee applies the techniques and principles of the appropriate science to the activities of the department's Stormwater Management Program. Conducts industrial/commercial site inspections and surveys, and communicates with industry, citizens, and Parish officials regarding applicable laws, ordinances and best management practices, prepares reports, notices of violations, program files, documents and program correspondence.

For the current vacancy in the Stormwater Management Program, employee conducts site inspections, surveys, and sampling from various media, including surface water, drainage canals, process and wastewater discharges, in accordance with standard methods and federal/state guidelines for the following categories that may impact water quality. Performs wet and dry weather screening of drainage outfalls and responds to citizen complaints, fish kills, oil spills, hazardous incidents and other releases to the environment that affect surface water quality, aquatic life, public health, and parish stormwater drainage collection systems, consulting on appropriate remedial/corrective action to be implemented.

Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.

Must meet one of the following:

  • I. Current employment with Jefferson Parish and permanent civil service status in the classification of Environmental Quality Technician II;
    PLUS
    , possession of at least a Class II certification in Wastewater Collection OR Wastewater Treatment from the Louisiana Operator Certification Program, issued by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.
  • II. Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Bio-Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, Forestry, or a closely related degree;
    PLUS
    , substantial (at least one year nine months), satisfactory work experience involving the enforcement of environment regulations or the implementation of environmental programs.
  • III. Possession of a Master's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Bio-Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, Forestry, or a closely related field.

Related education, experience, and/or professional certification(s) above and beyond the minimum qualifications will be required for consideration of an entrance salary above the minimum rate.

The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof.
