Senior Process Utilities Engineer
We are seeking a Senior Process Utilities Engineer to lead the planning, design, implementation and commissioning of utilities systems for life sciences and pharmaceutical facilities. The role will own utilities engineering deliverables across projects, develop proposals and budgets, coordinate with vendors and stakeholders, ensure compliance with industry codes and regulatory guidance, and support HAZOP and qualification activities. The ideal candidate brings strong piping and 3D modeling experience, a demonstrated track record in utilities design and commissioning, and a PE license or equivalent.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead design and engineering of process for life sciences and/or pharmaceutical projects.
- Prepare technical scopes, cost estimates, proposals and project budgets for utilities work; track costs and support commercial negotiations.
- Develop piping and equipment layouts, isometrics and 3D models using industry CAD/3D tools; review and approve detailed drawings and specifications.
- Coordinate vendor selection, evaluation, and procurement; prepare vendor scopes, review submittals, and manage vendor interfaces during delivery and installation.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable industry codes and standards (ASME, ANSI, NFPA, USP, ISPE) and regulatory guidance (FDA, EMA, GMP).
- Facilitate and participate in HAZOP reviews, risk assessments, and HCCP/HACCP related activities where applicable; drive resolution of action items.
- Plan, supervise and execute commissioning, qualification and turnover activities (IQ/OQ/PQ) for utilities systems; develop and review commissioning plans, procedures and test protocols.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and designers; review technical deliverables and ensure quality and constructability.
- Collaborate with process, mechanical, electrical and automation teams to integrate utilities with process systems and controls.
- Drive continuous improvement by applying industry best practices, lessons learned and maintaining awareness of new technologies and regulatory changes.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Chemical, Mechanical or related engineering discipline; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 8+ years of relevant utilities/process engineering experience in life sciences, pharmaceutical, biotech and/or similar regulated industries.
- Demonstrated experience in utilities design and piping (specification, sizing, isometrics) and 3D modeling (PDMS, AVEVA, Revit or comparable tools).
- Strong knowledge of industry codes and regulatory guidance (ASME, NFPA, ANSI, USP, ISPE, FDA/EMA/GMP).
- Proven experience with proposals, budgets, vendor management, and project execution from design through commissioning and qualification.
- Experience facilitating HAZOPs and working with HCCP/HACCP principles and other process safety/risk assessments.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; ability to work across multidisciplinary teams and to lead client interactions.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred or equivalent certification/registration preferred.
