OverviewThe CalSTRS Financial Services Branch seeks a motivated individual to work as an Actuary Supervisor on the Actuarial Resources Team. The Actuarial Resources Division conducts actuarial studies related to benefit funding, program design, compliance, and investment risk. Under the System Actuary, the Actuary Supervisor designs, leads, and conducts studies, supervises analysts and research specialists, and represents the division on legislative issues.
Responsibilities- Design and lead actuarial studies for annual valuations, funding level reviews, and special studies.
- Supervise and review work of the CalSTRS Consulting Actuary and staff.
- Prepare and present actuarial reports and presentations to management and executive staff.
- Serve as a subject‑matter expert on actuarial science, health, investments, finance, and pension plan issues.
- Work with IT assignments including Pro Val, Actuarial Data Mart, Power BI, and develop internal software solutions.
- Read, understand, and manage computer programming languages, plan documents, federal regulations, and State law.
- Demonstrate consulting and auditing skills and a high degree of independence, initiative, and originality.
- Experience performing actuarial work for public pension plans, including OPEB and cash‑balance plans.
- Ability to present complex actuarial information to varied audiences.
- Programming experience in VBA, Python, and R.
- Experience with Asset–Liability Management studies and large data warehouses.
- Experience using SQL and Power BI to analyze actuarial data.
- Experience with member calculations such as subrogation, IRC 415 compliance, and actuarial equivalency.

- Current Actuary Supervisor examination.

- Disclosure of economic conflict of interest as required by the Conflict of Interest Code and Political Reform Act.
- Compliance with the CalSTRS Incompatible Activities Policy.
