ASSOCIATE STATE ARCHEOLOGIST / CULTURAL RESOURCES DIVISION/HISTORIC PROPERTIES PROGRAM / SACRAMENTO, CA
The reporting location for this position is at State Parks Headquarters in Sacramento, California. The Associate State Archeologist will work under the general direction of the Historic Properties Program Manager.
The Historic Properties Program assists 21 districts, comprising 280 Park units, in fulfilling the Department’s mission. As part of the Historic Properties Program, the Associate State Archeologist performs the more difficult and varied work in archaeological investigation and cultural resource management. The incumbent will utilize their knowledge of pertinent laws and regulations to review and comment on, or prepare, documents addressing cultural resources/historic property identification, evaluation and treatment, and provide guidance that may assist in preserving and managing historic properties.
The Associate State Archeologist prepares eligibility assessments and nominations for archeological resources, serves as the Cultural Resources Emergency Preparedness and Response Coordinator, and manages the Archeological Investigations and Collections Permitting process on behalf of the Department Preservation Officer. The position requires intermittent travel throughout the state to support cultural resources management needs across Park units, may work irregular hours coordinating requests for emergency Cultural Resource Advisors and collections evacuations, and may respond to emergency incidents.

Working ConditionsWorks in an office setting in a multi-story building with artificial light and temperature control. May be required to stand or sit for extended periods of time. Bending, kneeling and stooping may also be required. Field work requires ability to work in various climatic and geographical conditions, including sun, wind, rain, snow, ice. Uneven terrain, surfaces, dust, dirt, construction equipment, traffic, animals, insects, loud noises, etc.,
may be experienced. The incumbent may be required to intermittently travel throughout the state to support cultural resource management needs across Park units and may occasionally work irregular hours. Travel may include use of state owned, rented or privately owned vehicles, and travel on commercial bus, rail, airlines or other modes of travel.
