Mariposa County has one (1) vacancy for a Public Works Inspector I/II in the Public Works department. Only online applications are accepted.
DEFINITIONTo perform a variety of duties in the inspection of public works infrastructure projects and development projects; ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, county codes, and building codes; assist with ordinance revision and development as applicable to public works inspection functions; performs plan checks for public works structures; answers questions concerning development and infrastructure requirements from the public and tradespeople; and performs related duties as assigned.
The Public Works Inspector I is an entry-level employee in the Public Works Inspector series. Incumbents will learn on the job, and assignments are subject to close review and evaluation while in progress and upon completion. This classification is flexibly staffed with the Public Works Inspector II, and incumbents typically advance to the higher level after gaining experience and achieving proficiency that meets the Public Works Inspector II requirements.
This class is distinguished from the journey level by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this series.
The Public Works Inspector II is a journey-level position in the Public Works Inspector series. Employees in this classification function within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Employees at this level perform more complex technical functions, have more significant consequences of failure, or have a greater workload.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDPublic Works Inspector I – Receives immediate supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no supervision over staff.
Public Works Inspector II – Employees in this classification receive general supervision from supervisory management and work within standard policies and procedures. The employee may also provide technical supervision and training related to the work of a Public Works Inspector I.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Oversees and participates in the enforcement of laws, codes, and ordinances dealing with standards for public works infrastructure.
- Performs field inspections to ensure compliance.
- Issues notices of non‑compliance as appropriate.
- Monitors construction projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with approved plans, specifications, applicable codes, and regulatory requirements.
- Observes and measures project materials to ensure proper quality construction materials are used.
- Conducts final inspection upon project completion.
- Coordinates inspection assignments with other County departments, developers, and government agencies.
- Performs plan checks for Public Works and development‑related infrastructure projects.
- Explains and interprets applicable codes and ordinances for the general public, contractors, architects, engineers, and others.
- Investigates citizen complaints regarding code violations.
- Keeps abreast of changes to codes and regulations applicable to assigned area(s) of public works inspection.
- Maintains Public Works inspection records; prepares correspondence and reports; maintains accurate documentation.
- Provides consultation and recommendations for inspection and ordinance development and revision.
- Learns and performs sample extraction and laboratory and field testing of construction materials, including the use of the nuclear soil gauge.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Inspects major and minor subdivision road construction for land developments for compliance with County standards and conditions of approval (Public Works Inspector II only).
- Issues inspect and oversee private and commercial encroachment permits on County and/or Zone of Benefit roads (Public Works Inspector II only).
- Inspects work completed under the County Grading Ordinance and Improvement Standards (Public Works Inspector II only).
