Reporting to the Director of Consultation, the Environmental Monitor is responsible for protecting, observing, and reporting on environmental conditions within Driftpile Cree Nation territory. This role supports traditional land stewardship, ensures compliance with environmental regulations, and works collaboratively with community members, Elders, and external stakeholders to preserve natural resources and cultural values.
The Environmental Monitor plays a key role in balancing development activities with environmental protection, while incorporating Indigenous knowledge and practices.
Key Responsibilities Environmental Monitoring & Field Work- Conduct regular field inspections of land, water, wildlife, and vegetation within Nation territory
- Monitor industrial, construction, and resource development activities to ensure environmental compliance
- Observe and report environmental incidents, contamination, or disturbances
- Maintain accurate field notes, logs, and monitoring records
- Ensure all activities are conducted in compliance with applicable federal, provincial, and Band environmental regulations, legislation, and permitting requirements
- Monitor adherence to environmental policies and regulatory standards, identifying and documenting any instances of non-compliance
- Report non-compliance issues in a timely manner and recommend appropriate corrective and preventative actions
- Prepare clear, accurate, and comprehensive reports, summaries, and environmental observations for internal and external stakeholders
- Develop incident reports that document observations, response actions, and outcomes, including post-incident mitigation measures and recommendations to prevent recurrence
- Assist in the development and integration of applicable laws, regulations, and policies into organizational handbooks and guidance documents
- Work with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to incorporate traditional ecological knowledge into monitoring practices
- Support land-based activities and cultural programs related to environmental stewardship
- Educate community members on environmental protection and sustainability practices
- Participate in community meetings and provide updates on environmental issues
- Use GPS, GIS, drones, or environmental monitoring technology for data collection and mapping
- Maintain digital databases of environmental observations and monitoring results
- Assist in creating maps and visual reports for leadership and community use
- Monitor and report on climate change impacts (e.g., water levels, wildlife migration, forest changes)
- Support community sustainability projects such as conservation, renewable energy, or waste reduction
- Assist with environmental protection plans and climate adaptation strategies
- Participate in spill response and environmental emergency planning
- Assist in the containment and reporting of environmental hazards, including observing site conditions and documenting potential risks within the surrounding area
- Observe, monitor, and report environmental hazards to ensure timely mitigation and protection of land, water, and wildlife
- Coordinate with agencies and stakeholders during environmental incidents to support effective response and recovery efforts
- Review proposed development or land use activities for environmental impact risks
- Support consultation processes with industry and government
- Monitor ongoing projects to ensure adherence to environmental conditions and agreements
- Participate in ongoing training related to environmental monitoring, safety, and compliance
- Mentor youth or community members interested in environmental careers
- Promote local employment and skill development in environmental stewardship
Education & Experience
- Diploma or certificate in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Land Management, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Experience in environmental monitoring, fieldwork, or related work is an asset
- Knowledge of Indigenous land stewardship practices is highly valued
