Position: LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVE, DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Location: California

Legislative Representative, Department of Education

Salary: $8,661.00 – $9,777.00 per month (minimum salary for new to state candidates)

Location: Sacramento, California – eligible for a hybrid telework schedule (minimum 2 days per week in the office).

Primary Responsibilities
  • Monitor and analyze complex legislation affecting TK through 12th‑grade education.
  • Develop legislative recommendations on behalf of the California Department of Education and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
  • Serve as a trusted liaison with the Legislature, the State Board of Education, state agencies, and education organizations.
  • Prepare high‑quality legislative analyses, policy briefings, presentations, and legislative testimony for department leadership.
  • Coordinate multiple priorities, facilitate consensus among program staff, and ensure accurate, comprehensive, and timely responses to legislative inquiries and proposals.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in education legislation, budgeting, regulation, or classroom instruction.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of California’s legislative process and ability to analyze legislation.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to build credibility and trust with colleagues and external stakeholders.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in analyzing California legislation, researching legislative history, and evaluating policy impacts.
  • Understanding of current trends and emerging issues in public education, including early learning, preschool, transitional kindergarten, and higher education.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Experience translating complex policy issues into clear, accessible information for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with legislators, legislative staff, state agencies, and external partners.

Leave Program

This position is subject to the Personal Leave Program (PLP) 2025. The salary range shown on this posting does not reflect the 3% monthly base pay reduction in exchange for 5 hours of leave credits through June 2027.
