Overview
CA Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) is recruiting for a Business Taxes Specialist II (BTS II). The role coordinates, monitors, and evaluates multiple tax and fee programs, leads large-scale, multi-program field audits, provides training to audit staff, and advises taxpayers on the application of tax and fee laws. Salary: $8,020.00 – $10,542.00 per month. Final Filing Date: 7/30/2026.
New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range when applicable.
Key Responsibilities- Organize, coordinate, and oversee complex multi-tax and fee program audits.
- Work directly with IRS and CDTFA management, staff, accountants, tax managers, attorneys, and corporate officers of large national and international companies.
- Serve as a liaison with the IRS, CDTFA, and Joint Operations Center (JOC) participating states.
- Develop anomalies and analytical insights used to generate audit leads.
- Provide expert-level guidance on tax and fee laws to staff and taxpayers.
- Travel in-state and out-of-state up to 75 percent of the time to support audit operations.
- Position may be located in a high-rise building; standard office environment.
- Requires being in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
- Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.
- Ability to move/transport materials weighing up to twenty (20) pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Telework is partially available.
Minimum qualifications are described in the Class Specification for the Business Taxes Specialist II, Board of Equalization. The role is subject to the requirements of CDTFA and related civil service rules.
