To uphold the law and provide for the protection of life and property from the hazards of fire or explosion, to ensure the safety of our citizens in the constructed environment, to provide equal access to disabled individuals and to promote the efficient use of energy in commercial buildings.

Advance Your Career as a State Fire Marshal Lieutenant. Take the next step in your career by serving in a leadership role with the Office of State Fire Marshal. As a Lieutenant, you’ll lead and mentor Deputies, oversee complex inspections and investigations, serve as a subject matter expert, and support critical emergency response operations. From coordinating fire service resources during disasters to providing training, supporting policy and legislative initiatives, and managing special projects, you’ll have the opportunity to lead with purpose and make a lasting impact on public safety across Louisiana.

All qualifying options will also require an approved certification at the time of appointment (hire) or promotion:

  • Five years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
  • An associate’s degree in any field plus four years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
  • An associate’s degree in a criminal justice field, a fire service field, a construction field, architecture, or an engineering field plus three years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in any field plus two years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in a criminal justice field, a fire service field, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field plus one year of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field.

Job Duties:
  • May serve as an assistant to a supervisor or manager by performing administrative functions.
  • Can serve as lead worker, trainer, or mentor over lower-level Deputies.
  • Oversee the most complex inspections and investigations requiring special certifications.
  • May serve as subject matter expert to District Attorneys, Attorney General, United States Attorney, and the insurance industry; provides testimony in court as needed.
  • May assist in coordinating the revision of agency rules, regulations, and procedures to meet required changes; may provide training or conduct presentations on such changes.
  • May perform grant management tasks and submit related reports.

This position is a promotional opportunity for current, permanent employees of DPS/State Fire Marshal.

Work Schedule:

Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday—Friday

Location:

This vacancy is located in the Office of State Fire Marshal located Statewide.

Compensation:

The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
