Job Summary/Objective:

The Medical Assistant assists in the examination and treatment of patients by taking vital signs, preparing patients for diagnostic procedures, and maintaining treatment rooms and patient records. Operating in a clinic or physician practice setting, the Medical Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring smooth patient flow and providing support to healthcare providers to deliver high-quality patient care.

Essential Functions/Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist healthcare providers with patient examinations, treatments, and procedures as directed.
  • Measure and record vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, weight, and height, accurately documenting findings in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Prepare patients for diagnostic tests, procedures, or treatments, ensuring patient comfort and understanding.
  • Perform point-of-care testing, such as glucose monitoring, urinalysis, strep tests, and other diagnostic procedures as ordered.
  • Obtain and document patient history, symptoms, and chief complaints to assist providers in assessments.
  • Administer medications, injections, and immunizations as directed and within scope of practice.
  • Prepare and maintain exam rooms, ensuring cleanliness, proper stock of supplies, and functionality of equipment.
  • Assist with administrative duties, including scheduling appointments, managing referrals, and maintaining patient records.
  • Respond to patient phone calls and inquiries, providing information or directing concerns to appropriate staff.
  • Provide patient education on treatment plans, medications, and preventative care under provider direction.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control protocols, HIPAA regulations, and clinic policies to maintain patient safety and confidentiality.
  • Monitor inventory and request necessary medical and office supplies for clinic operations.
  • Support clinic efficiency by facilitating patient flow and coordinating with other team members.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced clinic environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail for accurate documentation and reporting.
  • Proficient in using electronic medical record (EMR) systems and medical equipment.
  • Compassionate and patient-focused approach with a professional demeanor.

Education, Certificates, and License:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant training program preferred.

Certificates:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or obtained within 30 days of hire.

License:

  • Medical Assistant Certification (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) preferred but not required.

Experience:

  • Previous experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinic, physician office, or outpatient setting preferred.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) and clinical procedures is advantageous.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting:
    Regularly lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Mobility:
    Frequent walking, standing, and movement for extended periods.
  • Posture:
    Bending, reaching, twisting, and performing repetitive tasks.
  • Dexterity:
    Fine motor skills for tasks such as drawing blood, administering injections, and typing.
