The Clinical Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support within the Student Health Center to assist in the delivery of quality primary care services to patients. This position performs a variety of Certified Medical Assistant duties, including assisting the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and other healthcare providers with patient care, obtaining and documenting vital signs and medical information, preparing patients for examinations and procedures, and maintaining accurate health records.

The position also provides coverage and support for the practice management functions of the clinic to help ensure efficient daily operations, continuity of services, and a safe, confidential, and patient-centered healthcare environment.

• Provide Certified Medical Assistant-level care to assigned patients in scheduled and emergency situations, including triage, phlebotomy, immunizations, injections, laboratory procedures, specimen collection, and diagnostic testing within the scope of the position.
• Assist the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and other healthcare providers with patient care, examinations, procedures, treatments, and other clinical activities necessary to support the effective delivery of healthcare services.
• Provide patient education, counseling, and instruction regarding discharge plans, medications, treatments, follow-up care, and other healthcare information as authorized by the appropriate healthcare provider; assist with the dissemination of approved health promotion information through university communication channels.
• Accurately and efficiently document patient care and clinic activities within the electronic medical record system, including practice management functions, electronic payment forms, clinic data logs, quality-control documentation, and other required records.
• Follow established infection-control and safety procedures, including the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), proper entry into isolation or contaminated areas, and the safe handling and disposal of biohazardous, medical, and general waste.
• Demonstrate the appropriate and safe use of clinical equipment, verify equipment functionality prior to use, and promptly report equipment concerns or maintenance needs.
• Maintain patient privacy, confidentiality, and discretion when entering or working within patient-care areas.
• Prioritize assigned responsibilities and patient-care needs in a fast-paced clinical environment, establish appropriate time frames for completing work, and take appropriate action in response to changing clinical and operational needs.
• Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to exchange necessary information, request supplies, maintain inventory, submit work orders, coordinate equipment maintenance, and support the security and efficient daily operations of the Student Health Center.
• Participate in peer review, quality assurance activities, provider and staff meetings, university-sponsored health events, community outreach initiatives, and off-site healthcare programs as assigned by the Student Health Director or appropriate University administrators.
• Maintain compliance with Student Health Center and Southern University policies, procedures, protocols, and applicable regulatory requirements; assist with updating clinical protocols and standards of practice as requested and perform other related duties as assigned to meet departmental and University needs.

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant diploma or training program.
• Current Medical Assistant certification from a nationally recognized or accredited healthcare certifying organization.
• Recent graduates of an accredited Medical Assistant program will be considered; otherwise, a minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience providing nursing or clinical patient care is required.
• Clinical experience in a physician’s office, outpatient clinic, hospital, student health center, or similar healthcare setting preferred.

• Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience working as a Certified Medical Assistant in a clinical healthcare setting.
• Demonstrated experience providing direct patient care in an outpatient, ambulatory, or primary care environment.

• Medical Assistant diploma from an accredited Medical Assistant training program.
• Current Medical Assistant certification from a nationally recognized or accredited healthcare certifying organization.
• Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
