Overview
Job Summary:
This position contributes to the architecture, design, development, implementation, and lifecycle support of web-based applications. The efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of the applications and systems under this position's charge are crucial to the organization and key stakeholders—including volunteer governance, leadership, staff, members, customers, and partners—since these systems significantly impact the organization's ability to monetize its intellectual property. The role typically reports to a Director or Manager level position and does not have any direct reports.
This position will be responsible for successfully delivering their assignments under the guidance of the director and tech lead.

- Contribute to architecture, design, development, implementation, and lifecycle support of web-based applications.
- Deliver assignments under the guidance of the director and tech lead while ensuring quality and timely execution.
- Balance Word Press/PHP with modern Next.js architecture to produce scalable, production-grade systems.
- Collaborate on high-impact web applications used by thousands of users.
- Must-haves
- Strong experience with Word Press & PHP
- Deep knowledge of Next.js (v14.2+)
- A problem-solver who enjoys tackling complex challenges
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools to improve speed and code quality
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or equivalent—graduate degree highly desired. Appropriate work experience may substitute for academic credentials.
- 7-10 years or relevant experience.
- Architecture and system design:
- Basic knowledge of Enterprise Architecture and system design.
- Knowledge of common design patterns (e.g., MVC, Singleton, Factory) and their application in software development.
- Ability to learn and practice best practices in code design to ensure maintainability and scalability.
- Project leadership and domain knowledge:
- Ability to understand the business and strategic vision.
- Proficiency in leading large initiatives and managing resources.
- Experience in understanding the business language.
- Experience in publications, conference event management, non-profit governance, volunteer management, digital library, marketing & sales technology, and association membership.
- Content Management Systems:
- Expertise in Word Press CMS (or Drupal) and custom PHP development.
- Experience building high-traffic eCommerce websites for enterprises using Word Press/Drupal, focusing on high availability, response time, and performance.
- Proficiency in implementing Word Press as a headless backend system with WP REST API.
- Knowledge of implementing and integrating with eCommerce packages/software such as Woo Commerce and Woo Commerce API.
- Experience with security issues with Word Press/Drupal and how to address them is required.
- Knowledge of integrating Word Press with other internal or external services.
- Experience with digital media and publications is preferred.
- Proficient understanding of cross-browser compatibility issues and workarounds.
- JavaScript, Typescript, and Front-End Development:
- Command of the latest JavaScript frameworks: MEAN & MERN stack.
- Expertise in Typescript, HTML, CSS, Tailwind, JSON, JavaScript, and AJAX.
- Understanding of Web Sockets, XHR, client-side caching, local storage, modules, and CORS.
- Web Services and APIs:
- Proficient in REST APIs.
- Experience integrating Word Press and Drupal with other services.
- Databases:
- Proficient in Mongo
DB, Dynamo
DB, MySQL, etc. - Experience in data modeling and data analysis.
- Proficient in Mongo
- Authentication and Security:
- Knowledge of LDAP and SSO setups.
- Experience setting up user authentication using standard services.
- Understanding of security issues with Word Press and mitigation methods.
