Information Technology Support Specialist (Student Intern)

Marina Coast Water District (MCWD) is looking for a dependable, motivated student who wants hands‑on experience in Information Technology and GIS. The intern will work directly with the District's IT Administrator and GIS Technician and follow a structured development plan that combines learning, hands‑on training, and real project work. You do not need to know everything before applying. We are looking for someone with basic computer knowledge, good communication skills, an interest in technology, and a willingness to learn.

MCWD provides drinking water, recycled water, and wastewater collection services to the City of Marina and the Ord Community. Technology and GIS support nearly every part of District operations.

What You Will Do

The IT Intern will assist with day‑to‑day technical support and IT and GIS projects. Duties may include:

  • Responding to staff requests for technical support.
  • Troubleshooting computers, software, printers, and network connections.
  • Setting up and maintaining desktops, laptops, monitors, printers, and other equipment.
  • Installing and updating Windows applications and approved software.
  • Assisting with wired and wireless network troubleshooting.
  • Assisting with endpoint security, backups, and software updates.
  • Maintaining IT inventory, records, and technical documentation.
  • Assist employees with Microsoft 365 and other District software.
  • Researching hardware, software, and technology solutions.
  • Assisting with equipment replacements and technology upgrades.
  • Working with technology vendors when needed.
  • Assisting the GIS Technician with mapping, GIS data, field technology, and related projects.
  • Assisting with other IT and GIS projects assigned.

The intern will receive training and guidance before working with unfamiliar systems.

Intern Development Plan

MCWD's internship program provides a solid combination of learning and project experience.

Interns may first learn a technology or process and then apply those skills to an actual District project. Projects may become more challenging as the intern gains experience.

Development opportunities may include:

  • Mentoring from the IT Administrator and GIS Technician.
  • Hands‑on technical training.
  • IT and GIS projects based on the intern's skills and interests.
  • Networking, cybersecurity, GIS, servers, data, and other technology areas.
  • Working with District staff, consultants, and vendors.
  • Building troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and customer service skills.

The goal is for the intern to leave MCWD with stronger technical skills, completed project experience, and a better understanding of careers in IT and GIS.

Examples of Past Intern Projects

Previous interns have assisted with projects such as:

  • IT Asset Inventory Project
  • District Hardware Replacement Project
  • Backup Internet Project
