Job Overview

A catastrophe adjuster, also known as an insurance adjuster, is responsible for inspecting property damages following a man‑made or natural disaster. The role involves establishing a fair and timely claims settlement with the policy holder through direct, physical inspection of the damaged property.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect property damage following earthquakes, tornadoes, fires, floods, or other disasters.
  • Conduct physical inspections, including climbing ladders, entering unsafe or hazardous areas, and working in unstable conditions.
  • Evaluate the extent of damage and determine the appropriate settlement amount.
  • Communicate findings with policyholders and the insurance company.
  • Provide recommendations for repair and restoration.
  • Travel frequently to claim sites; some positions may be staff adjusters with less travel.
Qualifications
  • High‑school diploma required; coursework in insurance adjusting or related fields is recommended.
  • Completion of a certification or training program (often within two weeks) or equivalent.
  • State‑required specialized license.
  • Strong foundation in building structure and design, often gained through experience in contracting, construction, home inspections, or appraisals.
  • Proficiency in mathematics, interpersonal and communication skills, technical knowledge, and computer skills.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in demanding environments.
  • Willingness to travel; staff positions may offer less travel but lower pay.

Adjusters use a laptop computer, calculator, ladder, specialized software, measuring tape, and necessary paperwork. Physical fitness is essential to perform tasks such as climbing ladders and working in unstable conditions.
