Job Summary

The Interpreter/Translator is responsible for oral interpretation and written translation for non‑English speaking patients and their families, and for members of the healthcare team. Acts as a cultural liaison between department staff and families, ensuring family‑centered care.

• Required:
  
  Minimum one (1) year of experience and knowledge in the interpretation and translation of medical documents.
• Preferred:
  Previous healthcare interpretation and translation experience in a hospital or clinical setting.
• Preferred:
  Familiarity with hospital setting and operations.
• Preferred:
  Experience in customer service settings.

• Required:
  
  Passing of language proficiency examinations (written and oral). High School Diploma or GED.
• Preferred:
  Bachelor’s degree in a related or healthcare field; completion of a medical interpreter certificate program and/or an interpretation program or degree.

• Required:
  
  Formal training in interpretation and translation; completion of medical interpreter training.

  Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Required:
  
  Ability to speak, read, write and understand English and the target language at a level appropriate for safe and effective performance.

  Ability to provide sight translations and consecutive interpretation.
• Required:
  
  Knowledge of cultural, social and linguistic communication factors; ethics, healthcare interpreter standards and the role of interpreter.

  Ability to type; computer & keyboard skills; proficiency with word processing software.

  Ability to perform job responsibilities independently; promote a high level of professionalism, care and customer service; adaptability to schedule changes and teamwork focus.

  Ability to provide simultaneous interpretation.

  Associate Healthcare Interpreter (AHI) or Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI).

• Functions in a dynamic healthcare setting with responsibilities that involve bending, carrying objects, climbing, keyboard use/repetitive motion, typing, and reaching of various heights.
• Physical activity levels:
  Lifting floor to waist level constant 67%+, frequent 36-66%, occasional 0-35%;
  Lifting waist level and above constant 67%+, frequent 36-66%, occasional 0-35%.
• Sensory requirements:
  Color discrimination, depth perception, far vision, hearing, near vision.
• Environment hazards:
  Airborne communicable disease, blood borne pathogens, chemical exposure, dust, extreme noise, extreme temperatures, radiation, uneven surfaces or elevations.
