Job SummaryThe Interpreter/Translator is responsible for oral interpretation and written translation for non‑English speaking patients and their families, and healthcare team members. Acts as a cultural liaison between department staff and families, ensuring family‑centered care.
Pay RangeMinimum $29.00 – Midpoint $29.00 – Maximum $30.00
Experience- Required:
Minimum one (1) year of experience and knowledge in interpretation and translation of medical documents. - Preferred:
Previous healthcare interpretation and translation experience working in a hospital or clinical atmosphere, familiarity with hospital setting and operations. Experience in customer service settings highly preferred.
- Required:
Passing of language proficiency examinations (written and oral). High School Diploma/GED or equivalent. - Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in a related or healthcare field. Completion of medical interpreter certificate program and/or interpretation program/degree.
- Required:
Formal training in interpretation and translation, completion of medical interpreter training.
- Required:
Knowledge of medical terminology. - Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English and the target language effectively at a level appropriate for the safe and effective performance of the job.
- Ability to provide sight translations and consecutive interpretation.
- Knowledge of cultural, social and linguistic communication factors.
- Knowledge of ethics, healthcare interpreter standards and role of the interpreter.
- Ability to type, computer and keyboard skills, use of word processing software.
- Ability to perform job responsibilities independently.
- Promote a high level of professionalism, care and customer service.
- Show sensitivity and respect in verbal and non‑verbal behaviors with patients, families, coworkers, and other healthcare members/associates.
- Teamwork focused, flexible schedule that may include weekends, and readiness for changes to meet department business needs.
- Provide innovative, creative ideas and a positive attitude to unexpected changes in workload or assignment to achieve CHOC’s mission and values.

Ability to provide simultaneous interpretation.

Associate Healthcare Interpreter (AHI) or Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI).
Functional demand involves physical activities such as bending, carrying objects, climbing, keyboard use, repetitive motion, pinching/fine motor activities, push/pull, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, wrist position deviation, and lifting from floor to waist level or above at varying frequencies. Sensory requirements include color discrimination, depth perception, far vision, hearing, and near vision. Environmental requirements include exposure to airborne communicable disease, blood borne pathogens, chemicals, dust, extreme noise levels, extreme temperatures, radiation, and uneven surfaces or elevations.
