Major Duties

• Provides real‑time communication access services in classrooms and campus events.
• Assists consumers with concurrent participation by voicing questions or comments entered into the system.
• Uses speed typing, automatic speech recognition, text‑condensing strategies, and phonetic/spelling abbreviations to produce real‑time transcriptions.
• Captures all spoken content while omitting non‑meaningful speech such as false starts and repetitions.
• Certifies in the applicable computer‑aided transcribing system and demonstrates familiarity with higher‑education contexts.
• Has at least three months of experience providing computer‑aided transcribing services, preferably in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of specialized computer‑aided speech‑to‑text software and word‑condensing strategies, including standard spelling and phonetic abbreviations.
• Working knowledge of the computer equipment used, language and vocabulary employed in assigned translating situations, and the industry's code of ethics; familiarity with deaf and hard‑of‑hearing accommodation needs.
• Ability to use specific speech‑to‑text software and word‑condensing strategies effectively, type at a minimum rate of 60 words per minute, demonstrate proficient English grammar and editing skills, maintain confidentiality, and work in stressful situations requiring constant attentiveness.
• Strong listening, phonetic aptitude, and language skills to ensure transcription of the full meaning intended by the speaker(s). Ability to understand and provide accurate transcriptions in academic, instructional, and administrative settings while maintaining confidentiality.

Classification & Compensation
:
Hourly Interpreter/Realtime Captioner/Computer‑Aided Transcriber / 7193 / 0. Anticipated hiring rate is $42.47 per hour; salary range $19.37–$194.60 per hour.

Schedule
:
Intermittent; hours and schedule vary. Temporary, renewable appointment; annual contract from July through June, subject to renewal.

Must work on‑campus in Northridge; not a telecommute position.
