Working for the Department of Transportation, Division of Equipment (DOE); the incumbent will work under the general direction of the Staff Services Manager 1 (SSMI) or the Clean Fleet Chief. The role involves supervising contractors in the installation and repair of GPS devices and related hardware in automotive, construction and highway maintenance equipment. The position may be assisted by a CT Heavy Equipment Mechanic Lead worker, other DOE employees or contracted technicians.
Responsibilities include keeping records, establishing training programs, implementing departmental policies, preparing equipment and labor budgets, estimating equipment repairs, improvements, and disposal. The incumbent diagnoses, repairs, uses and transports equipment. Typically, the role works independently and acts as lead in the absence of the Telematics – SSMI. Directs contractor and field shop personnel efforts, ensures workplace safety, maintains positive relationships with external vendors to facilitate quality and timely service/repairs, works closely with district personnel to prolong Caltrans GPS equipment in a safe and operable manner, and works with other State agencies to promote the economical use of equipment.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state‑owned or leased vehicle.
- The position requires a valid and unrestricted Class C driver’s license.

The SOQ serves as documentation of each applicant’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. It must be typed, single spaced, no more than two pages in length, and 12‑point Arial font.
