OverviewThe County of San Mateo Parks Department is seeking an experienced Park Ranger II to provide a variety of public services to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural, historical, recreational, and educational resources of the County. Responsibilities include maintaining trails and picnic areas, performing facility maintenance, assisting the public, guiding interpretive and recreational programs, and supervising temporary employees.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain trails, picnic areas, and camping facilities.
- Perform general facility cleaning and maintenance.
- Assist the public in utilizing park resources.
- Provide guidance, training, and supervision to temporary staff.
- Support interpretive and recreational programs.
- At least two years of experience in park management, forestry, natural resource conservation, law enforcement, construction, emergency response, or a closely related field.
- Practical experience in trail building and maintenance, facility cleaning, customer service, volunteer coordination, complaint handling, First Aid, CPR, safety procedures, law interpretation, and basic construction work.
This position requires outdoor physical labor and may include exposure to hazards such as sun, bees, ticks, poison oak, nettles, and pollen.
QualificationsEducation and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; typically two years of relevant experience.
Licensure/Certification: Possession of a California Class C driver license or equivalent at hire; obtain a Red Cross First Aid Certificate and a CPR certificate within six months; obtain a POST 832 Law Enforcement certificate within one year.
Knowledge of: Safety procedures, park regulations, First Aid/CPR, emergency response, business and construction arithmetic, computer operations for reports, quality customer service, basic supervision, park operations, carpentry/plumbing/electrical repair, power tools, trail building, natural resource management, habitat protection, landscaping, tree conservation, land use maps, endangered species protection, instructional methods, interpretive programs, and resource monitoring.
Skill/Ability to: Maintain cleanliness of park facilities; interpret information for the public; perform custodial and light construction work; use hand, electric, and pneumatic tools; respond in emergencies; perform administrative tasks; operate motorized equipment; communicate effectively; enforce rules; follow safety procedures; work courteously; lead and coach staff; and lift up to 60 pounds.

Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court employees with at least six months of continuous service will receive five points added to their score. The examination will include a training and experience evaluation (pass/fail) and a performance test (100% weight). Successful applicants will be invited to the performance test. All examinations are held in San Mateo County, and applicants pay their own travel expenses.
