A leading national environmental and engineering consulting firm is seeking an Executive Environmental Planning Lead to direct and grow its environmental planning practice across multiple California offices. This is a high-impact leadership role for a results-oriented, entrepreneurial professional with a proven track record of delivering complex environmental projects and building high-performing teams.

The ideal candidate will define the vision, strategy, and growth of the environmental practice, lead client relationships, and oversee multi-disciplinary project delivery across the state. This is an opportunity to shape a thriving practice while working on career-defining projects across energy, infrastructure, and environmental sectors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide executive leadership for the environmental planning practice across multiple California offices, including strategic direction, business development, and operational oversight.
  • Lead environmental planning projects across energy, linear infrastructure, renewable energy, and large-scale environmental programs.
  • Develop and execute growth strategies, leveraging client relationships, agency engagement, and market opportunities.
  • Mentor, lead, and manage planning teams, ensuring professional development, technical excellence, and a collaborative culture.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships at all levels of local, regional, and state agencies, as well as private sector clients.
  • Drive business development activities, including proposal development, scope and budget creation, and project pitching.
  • Establish and track practice-level goals and performance metrics, aligning with firm-wide strategy.
  • Operate with integrity and sound business principles, promoting a high-performance, professional culture.
  • Represent the firm externally as a senior environmental planning leader, maintaining credibility and visibility in the marketplace.
Candidate Profile
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Planning, or related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • 15+ years of experience in environmental planning, permitting, or consulting, ideally with multi-office leadership experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of environmental regulations, NEPA, permitting, and infrastructure-related projects (CEQA knowledge optional).
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and grow teams across multiple offices or regions.
  • Established client network and relationships with public agencies (municipal, county, state).
  • Demonstrated success in business development and practice growth, including proposal writing and project strategy.
  • Exceptional strategic, operational, and financial acumen, with the ability to balance growth and project delivery excellence.
  • Track record of leading large, complex projects in energy, infrastructure, or related sectors.
Why This Role is Compelling
  • Lead a multi-office environmental planning practice with autonomy to define strategy and growth.
  • Work on high-visibility, career-defining projects across California.
  • Opportunity for performance-based advancement and potential equity/ownership pathways.
  • Influence firm culture, operations, and long-term strategic direction.
  • Be part of a collaborative, high-performing, and mission-driven organization that values technical excellence.
