Business & Financial Services (BFS) at UC San Diego is a dynamic and essential part of the university's financial operations, overseen by the Assistant Vice Chancellor and UC San Diego Controller.
BFS is comprised of several specialized divisions that collectively manage the university’s financial resources and supports UC San Diego's academic and research mission. These divisions include Office of the Controller, Financial Operations & Sponsored Projects Finance, Internal Controls & Accounting, Financial Insights & Training Solutions, Student Financial Solutions, and Finance & Administration. With an annual budget of approximately $20 million, BFS offers a collaborative and innovative environment where more than 150 career staffand a diverse team of student assistants, contractors, and casual employees work together to form the backbone of the university's financial infrastructure.
The Cash, Banking and Receivables Management division at UC San Diego plays a pivotal role in managing critical financial operations that support the University's mission. The division provides leadership and oversight for essential financial functions, including Accounts Receivable, Banking Operations, Cashiering Office operations, Merchant Card Services and e-Markets, PCI Compliance, and Cash Management. As a key component of the Business & Financial Services organization, the division is committed to safeguarding financial integrity, ensuring compliance with University policies and regulatory requirements, delivering exceptional service to campus partners, and continuously improving financial processes through innovation and operational excellence.
This leadership role is responsible for overseeing the full-cycle management of Accounts Receivable and the Cashiering Office. The incumbent directs the day-to-day operations of receivables, including sundry receivables and project invoicing in Oracle from initiation through completion, collections, payment application, cashiering services, cash handling and deposit operations, balance sheet receivables account reconciliations, ensuring accuracy, operational excellence, compliance, and strong internal controls across all functions.
The Assistant Director provides strategic guidance, training, and operational support to financial officers, departmental business staff, and campus partners engaged in receivables, cashiering, and payment application activities. The incumbent promotes a customer focused service model while ensuring adherence to university policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
Leading a team of professional and represented staff, the incumbent fosters an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing work environment. The Assistant Director is responsible for leading effectively within a unionized environment, managing employee performance, supporting employee development, and maintaining positive labor-management relationships while promoting accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.
Operating with significant autonomy, the Assistant Director resolves highly complex accounting, operational, and customer service issues using sound judgment and strategic thinking. The role provides leadership for cross-functional initiatives, business process improvements, technology implementations, and financial operations projects that support the University's strategic objectives.
