Interim Managing Director

Position Type: At-will, temporary, exempt

Location: Remote, must be California-based

Duration: 6-18 months

Reports To: KIWA's Executive Director, Coalition Co-Presidents and Co-Managing Directors

Position Summary

California Coalition for Worker Power seeks an experienced and hands-on Interim Managing Director to provide financial leadership and operational support during a short-term transition period. The Interim Managing Director will set up systems and oversee the organization's financial operations, strengthen organizational digital security protocols, partner with the leadership team to fundraise strategy, and provide oversight of organizational activities, priorities, projects and decisions.

The ideal candidate is a proven operations and executive leader who can quickly create unified finance systems, oversee priorities, and work effectively with directors, staff, finance, and coalition partners to execute plans.

Job Description

We are seeking a proven and experienced Interim Managing Director who will provide strategic and operational leadership to set up systems to the coalition's continued growth, effectiveness, and alignment during a period of transition. Working closely with coalition leadership, staff, and member organizations, the Interim Managing Director will create and strengthen internal systems, facilitate cross-coalition coordination, and ensure that organizational priorities are translated into clear plans and effective execution.

The Interim Managing Director will partner with CCWP leadership and work groups to lead the following areas:

Finance & Administration
  • Working with coalition leadership, drive a process to consolidate the coalition's organizational structure, including transition to a single fiscal entity.
  • Oversee the completion of the coalition's financial systems, including identifying gaps and implementing practical systems to improve financial visibility, accountability, compliance and decision-making.
  • Lead and oversee the 2027 budget process and subgrants process including the development of overall strategy, support decision-making regarding overall budget and subgrant amounts, coordinate with staff, manage disbursements, and ensure appropriate financial documentation and accountability
  • Work with all relevant parties to ensure compliance with coalition's financial policies and procedures, as well as applicable grant requirements, accounting standards, and other financial obligations
  • Monitor budget-to-actual performance, identify trends, variances and potential areas of over- or under spending and proactively collaborate with staff and leadership team.
  • Support the development and implementation of organizational security protocols.
Organizational Operations
  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the coalition; ensure that decision-making structures, roles, responsibilities, and processes are clear, effective, and aligned with the coalition's long term agenda and goals.
  • Ensure continuity between coalition meetings and decision-making spaces, communicate decisions, next steps, ownership, and timelines so that collective work moves forward between convenings, and retreats.
  • Serve as strategic thought partner to coalition leadership, help navigate competing priorities, resolve organizational and governance challenges, and maintain focus on shared goals.
  • Maintain clear governance documentation, include decisions, policies, roles, meeting records, workplans, and other materials necessary to support institutional memory and accountability.
  • Evaluate and strengthen coalition governance practices over time, use feedback and experience to improve how the coalition makes decisions, shares power, manages conflict, and advances collective work.
Leadership Support
  • Coordinate and facilitate staff and Leadership team meetings including develop agendas, sequence and prioritize topics, manage scheduling, and ensure clear decisions and next steps
  • Plan and coordinate Leadership Team and Coordinating Committee retreats, ensuring clear objects, effective agendas, strong facilitation, and alignment with organizational priorities
  • Provide strategic oversight of organizational priorities, ensuring that key initiatives, projects, and meetings remain focused on the coalition's measurable outcomes, and long term vision.
