Join the County of San Diego as an Assistant Director of Departmental Operations – Public Health Services!
We’re seeking a dynamic leader to oversee daily operations across multiple Public Health Services (PHS) divisions. In this high‑impact role, you’ll guide budgets, contracts, personnel, IT, and performance improvement efforts while supervising Deputy Directors and supporting a talented, mission‑driven workforce.
You’ll collaborate with executive leadership, engage community partners, drive organizational improvement, and help shape policies and programs that promote health across San Diego County. This role also represents PHS to the Board of Supervisors and acts on behalf of the PHS Director when needed.
We’re looking for an innovative, forward‑thinking executive to lead a large, multi‑disciplinary team dedicated to advancing wellness, self‑sufficiency, and quality of life for all San Diego County residents. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of public health laws, core public health practices, community health needs, and equity‑driven policy development.
You will excel at navigating complex organizations, collaborating with government and community partners, and engaging high‑level stakeholders — from elected officials to advisory boards. With strong strategic and organizational skills, you will align priorities across teams, drive enterprise‑wide results, and ensure programs support diverse populations with fairness, access, and inclusion.
Five (5) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the classification. Experience must include four (4) years of management level experience and at least one (1) year of supervision; AND a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university or a certified foreign equivalency.
Note: A master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited U.S college or university, or a certified foreign equivalency, may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience and cannot be applied to the required one (1) year of supervision.
