Summary: The Assistant Superintendent of Schools provides executive-level leadership, supervision, coaching, and accountability for a portfolio of schools within the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) , serving as a senior leader responsible for ensuring that schools deliver high-quality teaching and learning, strong school leadership, positive learning environments, and improved outcomes for all students.
The Assistant Superintendent directly supervises and develops Executive Directors of Schools and maintains an overall supervisory lens for principals within the assigned portfolio. Working through Executive Directors while remaining closely connected to schools and school leaders, the Assistant Superintendent ensures consistent expectations, differentiated support, effective principal coaching, and accountability for results.
The Assistant Superintendent serves as a critical connection between the Superintendent, district executive leadership, Executive Directors, principals, and central-office departments, ensuring that district priorities translate into effective school-level practices and that barriers affecting school performance are identified, escalated, and resolved.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership and Supervision of Schools
- Provide executive leadership and oversight for assigned elementary or secondary schools to ensure alignment with the mission, vision, strategic priorities, instructional expectations, and performance goals of East Baton Rouge Parish School System.
- Directly supervise, coach, develop, and evaluate assigned Executive Directors of Schools.
- Maintain supervisory oversight of principals within the assigned portfolio and ensure that principals receive consistent, high-quality coaching, feedback, support, and performance management.
- Establish clear expectations for Executive Directors regarding principal supervision, school visits, coaching, documentation, progress monitoring, and follow-through.
- Conduct regular individual and team coaching sessions with Executive Directors focused on leadership development, school performance, and execution of district priorities.
- Participate in principal coaching and school visits alongside Executive Directors to calibrate expectations and strengthen the quality of principal supervision.
- Ensure clear lines of accountability from the Assistant Superintendent to Executive Directors to principals and ultimately to classroom-level implementation and student outcomes.
Principal Development and Coaching
- Establish a coherent system of principal development that strengthens principals' capacity to serve as instructional leaders.
- Ensure Executive Directors provide differentiated coaching and support based on principal experience, leadership performance, school needs, and student outcomes.
- Observe principals leading key leadership practices, including classroom walkthroughs, teacher feedback, leadership team meetings, professional learning communities, data meetings, and school improvement processes.
- Provide direct coaching and feedback to principals when appropriate while strengthening the Executive Director's capacity to serve as the principal's primary supervisor and coach.
- Identify high-performing principals and emerging leaders who can contribute to leadership development, mentoring, succession planning, and district wide improvement efforts.
- Partner with Human Resources and other district leaders to support principal selection, onboarding, development, evaluation, retention, succession planning, and, when necessary, performance improvement.
Instructional Leadership
- Ensure schools consistently implement the district's instructional vision, adopted high-quality instructional materials, assessment systems, intervention expectations, and other academic priorities.
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of effective instructional practices and district instructional expectations across assigned grade levels.
- Conduct frequent school and classroom visits to assess the quality and consistency of teaching, learning, school leadership, and implementation of district priorities.
