Position: Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), QC Inspector
Location: California

Overview

A Large aerospace manufacturing client located in Santa Fe Springs CA is looking for a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) that will primarily be responsible for managing and implementing the company’s welding program requirements in accordance with American Welding Society (AWS) standards and the company’s Quality Management System (QMS) while also ensuring compliance to applicable customer or statutory regulations. Secondary functions will be supporting general QC Inspection activities.

This is a hands-on welding quality position responsible for maintaining and updating welding procedures, qualifying welders, conducting daily weld inspections, and managing mechanical testing. The ideal candidate comes from a structural steel or heavy fabrication environment and is comfortable working closely with production teams in a fast-paced, highly technical setting. A Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is required for consideration.

Responsibilities
  • Create and maintain WPSs
  • Creating test plans and Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs)
  • Monitor the welding of test coupons
  • Perform destructive and nondestructive testing as qualified
  • Outsource destructive and nondestructive testing as needed
  • Interpret test results
  • Document and file reports and data
  • Generate WPSs utilizing weld management software
  • Qualify welding personnel
  • Generate Welder Performance Qualification Records (W-PQR) utilizing weld management software
  • Perform critical weld inspections as required by AGSE, AWS, and customer requirements
  • Maintain welder continuity records utilizing weld management software
  • Assist and advise Engineering department with weld related issues
  • Research new methods for increased effectiveness within AGSE’s welding program
  • Advise and lead the Qualified Welding Inspector (QWI) team
  • QWI program: train and qualify individuals in accordance with AGSE requirements within our QMS; monitor the QWI activities to ensure effectiveness, accuracy, and performance; generate quarterly metrics report
  • Aid in generating DCRs for welding symbols and drawing corrections/improvements
  • Other Responsibilities and Authority: has authority to make decisions and to direct shop personnel regarding weld quality related issues; performs various QC inspections throughout the facility; travels to supplier facilities to perform source inspections as needed; conducts measurement system analysis; evaluates nonconforming material and coordinates disposition; helps monitor corrective actions for validation; oversees and monitors inspection and testing of materials, parts, and products to ensure adherence to quality standards;

    recommends changes to quality control policies and procedures; other duties as assigned by the Quality Assurance Manager.
Day to Day
  • Maintain, update, and modernize welding procedures, including prequalified and non-qualified procedures
  • Identify gaps in existing procedures and develop new ones
  • Create and manage documentation within company software (Welding Qualifier by TWI; training provided)
  • Procure materials needed for testing and procedure development

    Qualification:

    Oversee mechanical testing of weld test coupons (bend testing, lab testing, etc.); set up testing, witness results, and prepare the required qualification documentation; qualify new hires and non-certified welding inspectors under an internal training program; ensure proper testing and qualification for all welding personnel
  • Welding Quality & Inspection:
    Conduct weld inspections throughout the day; provide daily consultation and technical support to the welding department; support hands-on inspection, testing, and troubleshooting activities; ensure all procedures, records, and quality standards are maintained
  • Operational Support:
    Assist with catching up on outdated or obsolete welding procedures; work within a growing team, supporting both short-term and long-term quality goals; occasional travel may be required
Required Skills & Experience

Current American Welding Society - Certified Welding Inspector

  • 5 years in a welding/fabrication environment
  • 5 years in a Quality Assurance organization
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Proficiency with calipers, micrometers, measuring tape and other common metrology instrumentation
  • Experience or education in advanced metallurgy (Preferred)
  • Experience in structural steel, heavy machinery welding, fabrication, or repair environments
  • Ability to perform hands-on inspection and testing methods
  • Strong understanding of mechanical testing processes
