Duties and Responsibilities
The Value Stream Production Manager is responsible for all the activities that occur in the Value Stream. A “Value Stream” is defined as the activities and associated resources needed to bring a product through a process to meet customer demand. To the extent feasible, the resources in a Value Stream will be dedicated to the product produced. General responsibilities can be summarized into two categories:
- Tactical, day-to day performance of the Value Stream
- Creation of the current state and future state value stream maps and the execution of the associated implementation plan
- Assure output of the Value Stream is at required levels to meet customer demand.
- Implement/maintain all safety procedures that pertain to the processes in the Value Stream.
- Maintain capacity of manpower and processes to meet future customer demands.
- Lead the implementation of the lean manufacturing techniques and philosophy in the Value Stream to continuously improve the resources (material, labor and supplies) needed per unit of output.
- Develop direct reports and other Value Stream employees professionally, technically and in support of a lean, team-based culture.
- Assure adherence to all standardized business processes.
- Report to the plant manager with updates on the two general responsibilities.
- Establish and utilize frameworks and systems, including tools such as visual management, problem solving, standard work and kaizen.
- Adhere to and promote the HR Pledge.
- Cooperate and commit in a team environment to achieve goals and deliverables.
- Resolve difficult or complicated challenges using the problem-solving process.
- Actively embrace our core principles.
The Value Stream Production Manager will have the entire “Focus Factory” under his/her charge and will be responsible for the management of this team. The number of direct reports will vary but are expected to range from three to eight.
Competencies Technical- Strong understanding of the principles of lean manufacturing and how to implement the tools in support of operational performance goals
- Appropriate knowledge of relevant safety and environmental regulations and procedures
- Ability to use the manufacturing information system to obtain information pertaining to the facility
- Ability to develop and use project management techniques to manage key initiatives
- Ability to use a personal computer to perform ad-hoc analysis and create management tools
- Ability to oversee quotations, engineering, scheduling and purchasing of responsible parts and product
- Understanding of and the ability to utilize the concepts of change management to achieve successful implementation of business objectives
- Ability to influence others in a desired direction using goals, training, standards/rules, recognition, coaching, team spirit, assistance, initiative, self-control, honesty and priority setting to achieve business results
- Ability to handle personnel issues decisively and fairly
- Ability to inspire and motivate others to perform well, accepts feedback from others
- Ability to direct the activities of a group of production supervisors and lead people; effective supervisory and management skills
- Ability to prioritize and plan work activities, uses time efficiently and develops realistic action plans
- Ability to delegate work assignments, gives authority to work independently, sets expectations and monitors delegated activities
- Ability to train individuals in desired positions
- Ability and willingness to consider the impact of one’s own decisions on others, both inside and outside of their immediate work group
- Ability to relate to others in a professional manner and effectively deal with sensitive personnel issues while considering the needs, wants and feelings of others
