As a Machine Operator, you will set up and operate conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts.

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

• Design and/or develop tools, jigs, and fixtures used in production.
• Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
• Measure, mark, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
• Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
• Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or input/edit computer-controlled media.
• Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust controls as required.
• Verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
• Set up and operate machine on trial runs to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed data.
• Assemble parts into complete assemblies and verify dimensions and alignment of assemblies.
• Install machined replacement parts and test operation of units to ensure functionality and performance.
• Operate welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
• Develop specifications from general descriptions and draw sketches of parts to be fabricated.
• Confer with engineers, production personnel, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

Required Experience

• One to three months related experience and/or training.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• A fully qualified Machinist will have completed, including passing a written test, and satisfactory completion of at least eight terms of machinist courses at an accredited technical school.
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

• Employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. Frequently walk and talk or hear. Occasionally sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; occasionally up to 25 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
