Job Title: CNC Machinist II
Job Description
The CNC Machinist II operates and sets up CNC lathes and mills to produce precision parts from raw materials, following detailed blueprints and engineering specifications. This role focuses on tight-tolerance machining in a job shop environment, performing daily setups, measurements, and adjustments while maintaining high quality standards and low scrap rates across multiple phases of the manufacturing process.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC lathes and CNC mills daily, ensuring proper tooling, fixturing, and program selection for each job.
- Interpret and work from blueprints and engineering drawings to machine raw parts to precise specifications.
- Use measurement tools such as calipers and other precision instruments to verify dimensions and maintain tight tolerances.
- Run HAAS mills and Mori machines to produce legacy and new parts, adjusting G-code programs as needed to optimize performance and accuracy.
- Perform machine setups in a regimented environment, following established procedures for tools, fixtures, and work holding.
- Work on multiple machines simultaneously after training, efficiently managing workflows and production priorities.
- Monitor machining processes through all phases, including CNC machining, drilling, deburring, plating, and assembly support as required.
- Maintain a shop goal of approximately 1% scrap by identifying issues early, correcting deviations, and documenting process improvements.
- Handle precision work and tight-tolerance machining, making fine adjustments to offsets, tooling, and feeds and speeds.
- Collaborate with team members and leadership to ensure consistent quality, adherence to standards, and smooth handoffs between machining phases.
- Follow all shop procedures and safety guidelines while working with machine tools and related equipment.
- Participate in overtime opportunities based on performance and production needs.
Essential Skills
- 3-5 years of experience as a CNC machinist, working comfortably with both lathes and mills.
- Hands-on experience setting up CNC lathes and CNC mills on a daily basis.
- Proficiency with G-code programming and editing for CNC machines.
- Experience operating HAAS mills in a production or job shop environment.
- Experience operating Mori CNC machines or similar equipment.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Skilled in using measurement tools such as calipers and other precision instruments to verify dimensions.
- Demonstrated ability to hold tight tolerances and perform precision machining work.
- Comfort working in a machine shop or job shop environment with multiple machining phases.
- Ability to manage setups and operations in a regimented process-driven environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with magnet-related components is beneficial but not required.
- Ability and willingness to be trained to run two machines simultaneously.
- Back ground in machining legacy parts and supporting multi-phase production processes such as deburring, plating, and assembly.
- Familiarity with drill press operations in conjunction with CNC machining.
- Openness to training and skill development, including progressing from machine operator responsibilities to more advanced setups.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to achieving low scrap rates and high quality.
- Ability to work overtime when offered based on performance and production requirements.
Why Work Here?
You join a disciplined and supportive shop culture that values precision, continuous improvement, and professional growth. Processes, setups, and tools are clearly defined, creating a structured environment where you can focus on craftsmanship and quality. You receive hands-on training to expand your capabilities, including running multiple machines and working across different phases of production. Performance-based overtime opportunities allow you to increase your earnings while contributing to challenging and rewarding projects in a well-organized machine shop.
Work Environment
The role is based in a machine shop/job shop environment focused on precision, tight-tolerance machining and legacy parts production. You work with CNC lathes and mills, including HAAS mills and Mori machines, as well as drill presses and a variety of measurement tools such as calipers. Setups and tooling are regimented, with clearly defined procedures and multi-phase workflows that move parts through machining, deburring, plating, and assembly.
