About Phoenix Family
Phoenix Family works alongside families, children, and older adults who live in affordable housing communities across the Kansas City area. For many of the people we serve, housing is only part of the picture. With an average household income just over $11,000 a year, one unexpected expense or crisis can put stability t makes the difference is having support that’s close by, practical, and built around real life.
VolunteerOpportunities
Our programs are based where people live. That means tutoring and mentoring for kids, coaching and support for families working toward financial stability, and opportunities for older adults to stay connected, supported, and engaged as they age in place. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, we focus on listening, building relationships, and offering support that residents choose and find useful.
Volunteers are essential to making that work possible. Each year, hundreds of people give their time to Phoenix Family, helping with reading support, food access, seasonal programs, special events, and more. Even with that support, there is always more need than we can meet on our own. Whether you’re looking for a one-time opportunity, a recurring role, or a way to volunteer as a group, there’s a place for you here.
Phoenix Family is a relationship-driven organization. Our staff and volunteers work side by side with residents, grounded in trust, respect, and consistency. If you’re looking for a volunteer experience where you can show up, be present, and play a meaningful role in someone’s day-to-day life, we’d love to have you join us.
Help Kids Discover the Joy of Reading and Improve Their Literacy Skills! Volunteer reading coaches are the core of our after-school youth literacy program, HIKE (Help Instill the Key to Education). As a HIKE volunteer, you'll work one-on-one with students in grades K-8 who are working hard to improve their reading skills. In just one hour, you can help a child gain confidence, succeed in school, and see new possibilities for their future.
You don't need any teaching experience. We'll provide the training, lesson plans, and activities. All you need to bring is yourself!
- Reading labs are Monday-Thursday with two different sessions each day, one at 4:30 and one at 5:15.
- You choose your own shifts; we're flexible!
- Training, materials, and ongoing support provided.
