Ameri Corps - Harvest Pierce County Farm Program Nature and Purpose of the Position

This position will serve as a part of our Harvest Pierce County Farm team – supporting the next generation of farmers to create a just and healthy food system. They will lead and coordinate educational opportunities to teach new farmers about sustainable farming practices, and support beginning farmers in implementing conservation practices. Also, the member will help with community engagement efforts to share this information with broader audiences, as well as our ongoing efforts to reach more diverse communities.

About Pierce Conservation District

Pierce Conservation District is a government agency that works strategically, diligently and passionately to conserve and restore the natural resources of Pierce County. Our work improves both rural and urban communities to benefit the health and well‑being of our citizens. We work in five core program areas:
Farm Assistance, Water Quality Improvement, Habitat Restoration, Urban Agriculture, and Environmental Education. The District works for clean water, healthy soil, salmon recovery and local food access for all. Qualifications

Required:
  • Interest in working with community members working to develop the food system
  • Ability to work outside and lead work parties of volunteers
  • Some experience with farming in the Pacific NW
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook programs, as well as Google platforms
  • Self‑starter, ability to work well independently
  • Comfortable talking with strangers and groups
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities
  • Knowledge of and passion for environmental issues
Preferred:
  • 1–2 years of experience in agriculture, volunteer management, community education, or similar programming
  • Knowledge of Pierce County area and community
  • Experience with horticulture, agriculture, or conservation
Compensation
  • Monthly stipend of $2,438.10 before deductions and with holdings
  • Education award upon completion of service that can be used for future schooling or to pay off existing qualified student loan debt (upon successful completion of the service term, subject to federal tax)
  • Workers compensation coverage
  • Assistance with childcare costs
  • Forbearance (temporarily postponing paying off a loan) of qualified student loans during the service term
  • Payment of interest on qualified student loans that accrued during the service term (paid after successful completion of service term)
  • Access to fresh fruits and vegetables during the growing season
  • Leadership, project management, and natural resource training
