Essential Functions of Director of Nursing (DON)
  • Provide personal care to residents in a manner that ensures safety and comfort consistent with company clinical policies and procedures, and state/federal guidelines.
  • Initiate development and implementation of policies and procedures that govern nursing staff in collaboration with appropriate services.
  • Responsible for the provision of nursing services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Establish and maintain job specifications and descriptions for nursing staff.
  • Address and support cultural practices that do not harm others or interfere with medical therapy.
  • Recommend modifications to nursing staffing plans to ensure reasonable hours and acceptable working conditions.
  • Ensure each resident’s accident or incident is fully documented and reported per policies and regulations.
  • Represent nursing staff on committees such as Infection Prevention and Control, Pain Management, Performance Improvement, and Quality Assurance.
  • Make rounds to all nursing units daily.
  • Participate in performance improvement by collecting and verifying data, as needed.
  • Consult other departments to provide an interdisciplinary approach to residents’ needs.
  • Ensure licensed nurses perform head‑to‑toe assessments and reassessments on all residents.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of geriatric residents and evaluate nurses’ abilities to assess and reassess residents.
  • Interpret test results; take appropriate action.
  • Assess residents on admission and at least once per shift, as well as when conditions change.
  • Assess and manage residents’ pain; educate residents and families on pain management.
  • Promote independence for residents.
  • Document observations as required.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, hazard‑free environment for residents, family members, and staff.
  • Ensure equipment is clean and functional; report malfunctions.
  • Act as a team leader and role model.
  • Abide by the company clinical policies and procedures for abuse prevention.
  • Notify physician of changes in resident’s condition and follow through until appropriate action is taken.
  • Follow up on information from shift reports, residents, or families.
  • Implement plan of care based on assessments and interdisciplinary goals.
  • Attend all required meetings.
  • Plan and coordinate budgeting requirements with the administrator and service managers.
  • Control costs to maximize effectiveness of approved department budgets.
  • Follow infection prevention and control procedures; supervise staff.
  • React decisively and quickly in emergency situations.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
Qualifications of Director of Nursing (DON)
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with nursing management experience.
  • Current Registered Nurse license.
  • Must maintain a working email address and phone number for employer communication.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team.
  • Excellent communication with residents, families, and all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to react decisively and quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of training techniques for clinical staff.
