Job Overview
This Neonatal Nurse Practitioner position enhances the nature and quality of care for at‑risk or critically ill neonates and infants. The role involves primary medical management, emergency stabilization, emergency transport, preceptorship of NNP students, teaching of NICU residents, staff development and education, parental education, discharge planning, data collection for outcome measures, and participation in daily rounds. The practitioner provides 24/7 in‑house coverage for all NICUs and high‑risk deliveries under the supervision of the Medical Director and in collaboration with the NICU Unit Director, Operational Coordinator, Clinical Coordinator, staff nurses, discharge coordinator, and staff physicians.
Responsibilities- Provide primary medical management and emergency stabilization of critically ill neonates and infants.
- Transport neonatal patients in emergency situations.
- Precept and teach NNP students and NICU residents.
- Develop and implement staff development and education programs.
- Educate families, staff, other health professionals, and the community.
- Maintain current clinical knowledge, technical skills, and professional credentials.
- Conduct research or develop research methodology to improve medical practices and patient outcomes.
- Act as a contributing team member and assume a leadership role when needed to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Adapt communication and behavior to the patient population, including respecting privacy and tailoring explanations.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Master’s degree in nursing (or prior employment before 2003 with an NNP certificate).
Work ExperienceMinimum of 2 years of related nursing experience.
Certifications- Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Nurse Practitioner License in the state of practice.
- Neonatal Nurse Practitioner certification through the National Certification Corporation (NCC).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
- S.T.A.B.L.E. certification.
Eligibility for limited prescriptive authority in Louisiana.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of APRN procedures specific to the role, including chest tube placement, endotracheal intubation, lumbar puncture, needle thoracotomy, percutaneous central line placement, peripheral artery puncture and cannulation, removal of thoracotomy tube, suprapubic bladder aspiration, umbilical artery and vein catheterization, and ventricular catheter reservoir aspiration.
- Computer skills for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
- Proficiency with Windows applications and keyboard usage.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule (24/7, weekend, holiday, on‑call) and adapt to high‑pressure environments.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to various audiences throughout the patient care process.
Must be able to lift up to 20–50 pounds occasionally, 10–25 pounds frequently, and maintain light work pressures. Must stand for prolonged periods, travel between facilities, stoop, bend, reach, and grasp objects. Duties routinely require exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissues. The role includes occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous medications or waste. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
