Job Title:
Assistant Superintendent in Training – Serrano Country Club
Position Summary:The Assistant Superintendent in Training reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent. Under supervision, this position will assist in the maintenance and operation of the golf course while learning all aspects of golf course management. This role provides hands‑on experience and training to develop skills in turfgrass management, equipment operation, safety compliance, and horticultural practices. The Assistant Superintendent in Training may serve in a limited superintendent capacity under close supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- Support the goals and objectives of the Club, maintaining a professional, service‑oriented attitude at all times.
- Assist with the maintenance and implementation of the Safety Program for Golf Course Maintenance Operations; monitor safety conditions and support employee adherence to safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain a professional image, report to work on time, well‑groomed, and wearing appropriate attire or uniform.
- Assist in the planning and maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, and associated landscaping; help schedule work and learn to supervise employees and the use of equipment.
- Learn to operate and maintain all golf course equipment safely, including mowers, string trimmers, utility vehicles, pumps, and irrigation systems.
- Gain experience in pesticide and fertilizer applications under supervision, including calibration and operation of application equipment.
- Assist with irrigation, drainage, and general horticultural maintenance, including landscape plantings, flower beds, shrubs, and trees.
- Participate in personnel development by observing management tasks such as evaluating staff, ensuring safe work practices, and maintaining professional employee relations.
- Prepare reports, maintain records, and assist with administrative tasks as directed by the Golf Course Superintendent.
- Complete other training and tasks assigned by the Golf Course Superintendent or General Manager.
- This is a training position; the focus will be on learning to schedule and supervise maintenance work efficiently.
- Gain exposure to personnel management, including employee training, coaching, and development under the guidance of the Superintendent.
- Learn to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and maintain professional service standards for members and guests.
- Positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills; ability to work as part of a team and develop leadership skills over time.
- Eagerness to learn innovative approaches to turfgrass and horticultural management.
- Ability to follow directions, accept constructive feedback, and maintain a professional approach with coworkers, supervisors, and members.
- Ability to work independently under guidance and seek assistance when needed.
- 0–3 years of experience in golf course maintenance, landscaping, or horticulture preferred.
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Management, Horticulture, Agronomy, or related field preferred but not required.
SKILLS:
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and maintenance procedures.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Must speak and communicate effectively in English; fluency in Spanish is a plus.
SKILLS:
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Familiarity with software such as Paycom or Rain Bird Irrigation is desirable.
- Must provide valid documents to work in the U.S.
- California QAL/QAC or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
- Valid California Driver License required.
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred but not required.
- Work occurs outdoors in conditions ranging from winter lows of 30°F to summer highs of 105°F+.
- Exposure to outdoor and inclement weather conditions is expected.
- Ability to bend, reach, stoop, kneel, climb, and balance.
- Ability to lift 25–50 lbs.
- Sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
- Learn to operate and maintain all golf course equipment safely, including mowers, power tools, irrigation systems, and utility vehicles.
