Job Description and DutiesInterested in joining the Department of Fish and Wildlife's dedicated & diverse team at the Wildlife Health Laboratory (WHL)? We are seeking a highly skilled, strongly self-motivated individual to serve as the WHL Laboratory Coordinator. Learn more about this unique opportunity!
Under general direction of the Supervisor, the position will provide clinical and technical oversight of core laboratory operations, the WHL facility, and animal holding pens; including support staff, laboratory information management system(s), databases, equipment (e.g., autoclave, microscopes, radiation machine), and fleet assets (e.g., 4x4 vehicles, trailers). Establish and maintain standard operating procedures, processes, and protocols in coordination with senior staff. Coordinate and assign Laboratory Health & Safety monitoring and hazardous waste disposal duties (e.g., biological materials, chemicals, controlled substances);
maintain Radiation Safety program. Prepare and review technical documents and/or oversee multi-year feasibility study logistics requiring higher level expertise specific to statewide laboratory operations. See Duty Statement for more information.
This is a full-time limited term position for 12 months; it may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

This position may be eligible for a telework opportunity in accordance with departmental policies and operational needs. Employees are currently required to work in-person at least two (2) days per week. Beginning July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs.
This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Working ConditionsAbility to supervise and direct the work of various laboratory support staff. Ability to use a computer keyboard in a sitting and/or standing position several hours a day. Will interact with regional and branch staff, and members of the public via e-mail, telephone, and in-person. Must attend occasional meetings. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. Possession of valid California driver license required.
Ability to drive up to 8-hours. Must feel comfortable with potential close contact with imperiled and confined wild animals. Must be vaccinated against rabies virus with adequate current antibody titer or willing to receive pre-exposure vaccinations. Background check required for handling of controlled substances and/or firearms. The position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff.
