Location: California

The position is part of Roche Sequencing Solutions at the Santa Clara site. It involves developing new technologies to make genetic testing easy, reliable, and affordable, including timely screening of newborns, diagnosis of cancers and infectious diseases, and other applications. The Senior Systems Engineer will support Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) products and become an expert on the operation of the Roche Single Molecular Sequencing Platform.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a hands‑on key contributor in the feasibility, development, customer support, and integration phases of end‑to‑end NGS solutions, according to customer & product requirements and applicable regulatory and quality standards.
  • Learn and use the new Roche Single Molecule Sequencing platform and help develop final operating protocols.
  • Design and perform wet‑lab experiments to further develop the sequencing prototype instrument.
  • Interpret experimental results and design future experiments in collaboration with manager and team members.
  • Perform a variety of sample prep, library, sequencing, and sequencing‑related experiments on a daily basis and help analyze and interpret data.
  • Provide customer support activities such as monitoring runs, documenting and communicating defects, and following escalation paths to resolve customer issues; travel to customer sites if needed.
  • Maintain best laboratory practices and keep a well‑organized, concise record of work performed and progress made.
  • Assist engineers with hardware design through testing subcomponents; collaborate to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Analyze data, derive conclusions, document findings, write SOPs and prepare reports for sharing within and between R&D groups.
  • Work independently with limited management direction to drive product development using strong experimental designs and maintain detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development.
  • Support instruments, learn troubleshooting techniques as needed to assist R&D and support customers.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s in Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree in the above fields with 1 or more years of related experience.
  • Strong understanding of DNA & Molecular Biology.
  • Proven hands‑on troubleshooting experience and skills in wet bench workflows on NGS platform.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams (chemistry, hardware, software).
  • 3+ years of hands‑on experience with DNA sequencing such as raw sample preparation, nucleic acid extraction, library preparation, and NGS sequencing.
  • Previous laboratory experience with nucleic acid handling and contamination control.
  • Experience with statistical tools (e.g. Python/JMP for regression analysis, ANOVA), Design of Experiments methodology, and application of statistical process control.
  • Proven hands‑on experience with PCR technology.
  • Strong teamwork and cross‑discipline collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in implementing workflow on semiconductor‑based sensing devices or microfluidic devices.
  • Experience with prototype instruments or DNA sequencing.
  • Knowledge in surface chemistry.
  • Knowledge in all phases of NGS workflow, including nucleic acid chemistry and primer design technologies for gene targets.

The role is based onsite in Santa Clara, CA. This is not a hybrid position. Relocation benefits are not available for this job position.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location Santa Clara, CA is $83,900 – $155,700. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job‑related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
