Job SummaryThe Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) seeks an Environmental Scientist to analyze pesticide efficacy and phytotoxicity data for products submitted for registration, review research authorization applications, and develop scientific recommendations. The position operates under close supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) and contributes to California’s statewide pesticide registration program, safeguarding natural resources and public health.
Responsibilities- Analyze pesticide efficacy and phytotoxicity data, applying scientific methods to identify hazards and recommend risk mitigation strategies.
- Prepare clear, technical evaluation reports in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
- Review and process research authorization applications, evaluating testing procedures and protocols submitted by registrants.
- Meet with industry representatives to resolve data requirements and registration issues.
- Provide scientific expertise to departmental staff on pesticide registration and regulatory matters.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Experience in pesticide registration, data evaluation, or scientific research related to pest management.
- Knowledge of the pesticide registration and data evaluation process.
- Excellent scientific writing and oral communication skills.
- Analytical thinking and problem‑solving ability.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience in entomology, mycology, plant pathology, or plant physiology.
- Knowledge of diverse cultural communities and regional demographics.
- Effective communication, organization, and negotiation skills.
- Work in a high‑rise office environment with artificial lighting.
- Use a computer, monitor, mouse, and keyboard for an 8‑hour day.
- Lift and carry data volumes up to 10 pounds.
- Occasional travel may be required.
Position eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible California residents. Non‑resident employees are not eligible for telework. Employees may need to report to the designated headquarters during the workday, at their own expense.
Minimum RequirementsMinimum salary ranges: $4,418.00 – $6,035.00 A; $5,370.00 – $7,350.00 B; $6,796.00 – $9,321.00 C. Additional qualifications are specified in the Class Specification.
