Job Overview
The Grocery Clerk is responsible for keeping the store's grocery shelves stocked and clean, assisting customers, and maintaining safety and a positive customer experience during business hours.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Ensures cleanliness of grocery shelves, storage area, and work area for safety, including cleaning shelves and products, keeping floors free of liquid spills, removing hazardous debris, and sweeping.
- Stocks grocery shelves; presents product, faces, fills, and organizes all items as set by the Grocery Department schematics, ensuring tag and pricing accuracy.
- Examines the rotation of all grocery products, paying particular attention to expired stock and discarding outdated or spoiled items.
- Responds positively to customers’ inquiries and assists customers with purchases, product information, and selection; sells and cross‑sold products.
- Receives, inspects, and logs products for accuracy of shipment, temperature, and quality.
- Monitors point‑of‑purchase signs, ensuring a variety of recipe cards, product coupons, promotional material, and information on complimentary foods is available.
- Operates and uses equipment such as knives, scales, wrappers, compactors, garbage disposals, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
- Uses knowledge of scales and weight measures to accurately weigh and label products.
- Cuts and stacks cases to build grocery displays and price and mark merchandise.
- Participates in pre‑inventory preparation, including back stock and ensuring tags match products.
- Sustains a high level of product knowledge and product preparation.
- Walks the department regularly to ensure an organized, sanitary, and overall clean appearance at all times.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalency degree.
- Preferred 1–2 years of grocery retail experience in the Grocery Department.
- Previous experience in a natural foods industry is a plus.
- Maintains the highest level of customer service at all times.
- Adapts to the high‑volume retail environment while working in a cross‑functional team.
- Takes initiative when problems arise.
- Demonstrates flexibility in a variety of situations.
- Exhibits advanced attention to detail, prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.

- Familiar with Health Department guidelines and regulations applicable to a grocery retail environment.
- Has basic knowledge of math, weights, and measures.
- Understands proper handling, preparation, seasonality, and appropriate shelf life of products.
