Job Function

Supports grocery store operations by handling a store’s inventory levels and product displays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Greet all customers, respond to questions and explain store policies courteously.
  • Prepare the back room for receipt of merchandise, unload trucks and sort cases for stocking.
  • Clean store floors, checkout lanes, carts, restrooms, parking lot and shelves; safely use cleaning equipment and chemicals.
  • Load stocking carts/pallets, transport cases to the sales floor, match case strip to shelf tag, place merchandise in the designated display position, and face the front row of each display.
  • Ensure safety of self, customers and co‑workers by following store safety rules and reporting hazards to a supervisor.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by supervisors and managers, substitute for absent workers, and provide services during peak periods.
  • Operate baler, case cutter, pallet jack and forklift (must be 18+ to operate); understand safety requirements.
  • Count and record individual items of merchandise for inventory.
  • Manually price mark/label merchandise without an UPC code.
  • Move damaged or unsalable products from shelves to the backroom or return center.
  • Use proper case opening and product stacking techniques to prevent damage.
  • Remove trash from aisles and operate the baler, placing bales on pallets and loading salvage onto trucks.
  • Change signs, light bulbs, tags, and price markers on shelf displays.
  • Assist cashiers by bagging or carrying when necessary.
  • Requirements and Qualifications
    • High school education (or concurrent enrollment) preferred but not required.
    • Prior experience or training as a grocery clerk preferred.
    • Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide). Ability to calculate mixture ratios for cleaning solutions.
    • English language proficiency: read, write, understand and communicate effectively.
    • Ability to solve practical problems, interpret instructions, make judgments regarding merchandise placement.
    • Knowledge of company policies, OSHA and HAZCOM requirements.
    • Ability to work efficient, accuracy, cleanliness, harmony, and safety standards; measured by units, throughput, or sales per hour.
    • Availability to work days, evenings, weekends, and extended hours as scheduled.
    • Maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and appearance; adhere to company dress code.
    • Good interpersonal communication and excellent customer service skills.
    Physical Requirements
  • Mobility: move cases and material up to 75 yards; collect carts up to 200 yards.
  • Work on tile or concrete.
  • Lifting: maximum of 100 lbs. from 6″ to 36″; 80 lbs. from 6″ to 84″ onto overhead storage rack.
  • Chaining: move cardboard into baler; handle up to 100 lbs. up to 10 yards; operate equipment.
  • Reaching: up to 36″ forward/down; up to full arm extension to place signs and banners.
  • Climbing: ladders, racks, shelves up to 12 feet.
  • Other tasks: picking up/debris, maintaining equipment, monitoring safety, communicating with vendors and co‑workers, perceiving visual cues.
  • Work Environment
    • Inside work with extreme temperature variations, dust and humidity from compressors and freezers.
    • Surfaces may be wet; tile or concrete floors.
    • Access to offices may require stairs.
    • Noise moderate to high when power tools and equipment operate.
    • No other unusual environmental conditions.
